Why is it so important for North Dakota Democrats to vote this year?
North Dakota has three electoral votes and is typically a Republican state when it comes to the presidency. As I noted in earlier coverage of the North Dakota polls, historically, North Dakota has only voted for the Democratic presidential candidate five times since 1892. In 1912 and 1916 North Dakota voted for Woodrow Wilson, and in 1932 and 1936 North Dakota voted for Franklin D. Roosevelt.
If North Dakota tips the other way in this election and casts its three electoral votes for Barack Obama, it will be the first time since Lyndon B. Johnson that North Dakota has voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.
According to the polls on RealClearPolitics.com, North Dakota is considered a 'toss-up' state. When I checked the polls toward the beginning of September, North Dakota was considered then to be leaning toward John McCain. Now, it's unclear which way North Dakota will vote.
Democrats! Did you hear this? The race between McCain and Obama are so close, North Dakota is considered a 'toss-up' state! Even more reason for North Dakota Democrats to vote for Obama in this presidential election.
One common opinion is that with three electoral votes, North Dakota votes don't matter. To vote for the Democratic candidate constitutes throwing away a vote. But consider this. According to some 2008 presidential election analysis, should Barack Obama carry all of the states he is expected to, he will only need to win any two of Nevada, North Dakota or West Virginia and/or any one of the remaining swing states to win the election.
North Dakota's three electoral votes can and will make a difference in a presidential race this close. If you have never voted before, get to the polls and vote for Barack Obama. There is no need to register to vote in North Dakota. This is history in the making here. Wouldn't it be great to be able to say, "Yeah, in the 2008 presidential election, my vote for Obama made a difference and helped him win the presidency!"
This election is an exceptionally close presidential race. So North Dakota Democrats, get out and vote! Your vote really does make a difference.

Post a CommentI have traveled your state and saw many public service projects paid by stimulus funds. Do you feel the same urgency for this 2010 election?
Everybody go vote! It's a shame some Americans don't realize what a privilege this is! People in some other countries risk their lives to go vote sometimes!
Come on ND- you can do it!
Oh, how I wish Kansas was a battleground state. At least I'm right on the KS-Missouri border, so I feel like I'm sorta a part of all the drama in Missouri. I'll be voting for Obama. He'll get my popular vote, if not my state's electoral votes, anyway! Great article, Heather! :)
WOW, I can't believe ND is a toss up. Apparently IN is too - it's nuts! This election is really turning things upside down. Great article!
Good report. Good reminder.
Great job! It's important to spread the word all over- Go vote!
I'm in a battleground state, too, Heather. Isn't it exciting? Good article you've written!
Palin's in deep crap again. Seems she changed records to indicate that her daughters accompanied her officially on trips she billed the state of Alaska thousands of dollars for. Why any Republican would vote for this power abusive dimwit is beyond me. Btw, good article, Heather. I'm hoping my home state of West Virginia swings Obama's way as well, but fear the rise of the ignorant rednecks among the voters...
