According to city officials, North Port issued 3000 building permits between 2003 and 2004, and there is still plenty of land left for housing, commerce, and recreation. The city recently established a goal to diversify the city's tax base with non-residential land uses. They hope to achieve a healthy balance between residential, commercial, and industrial land. With the proposed annexations, North Port will be the third largest city in Florida.
