North Queensland About to Be Bashed by Category 5 Cyclone Yasi
Cyclone Yasi Originating in the Fiji Area Will Hit North Queensland Coast Late Tonight
North Queensland bracing for Category 5 Tropical Cyclone to hit the coast tonight
Queensland, Australia has been in the news world-wide in recent weeks because of horrific flooding around 75% of the state. Major regional cities such as Rockhampton and Toowoomba were inundated, and crops in many rural areas were totally wiped out. The city of Brisbane went under as did many country towns. More than 30 people died in flood situations and about 8 are still missing.
There was a huge swell of community support to help flood victims clean out their homes and businesses and try to get their lives back to normal. Network Seven Sunrise breakfast program has done a wonderful job of reporting every part of the flood situation. Now their presenters and reporters have put themselves in harm's way to report on the massive tropical cyclone that is scheduled to hit North Queensland between Cairns and Townsville at around midnight tonight.
Evacuations ordered to ensure safety
Evacuation centers have been set up and thousands of people have been ordered out of their homes for their own safety. Many have fled south leaving their homes to whatever fate bestows on them. Thousands of backpackers from around the world are stranded in evacuation centers. Cairns Base Hospital and a private hospital in the tourist mecca were totally evacuated to Brisbane by the Royal Australian Air Force yesterday.
All anyone can do is to pray that everyone involved will be safe in this horrific situation. Authorities do not want loss of life to occur and they are doing everything possible to ensure everyone involved is bunkered down well before the cyclone hits. It could rage for six hours before it moves inland. With it will come giant storm surges that will dump metres of water in low-lying areas.
It is only four years since Cyclone Larry hit the North Queensland town of Innisfail. It was just recovering from the devastation and is now bracing to be hit again by a much larger cyclone event.
