Northern Leopard Frog: Common Test Subject and Edible Delight

Elisia Yun
Found throughout North America is the beautiful Northern Leopard Frog. Their name probably comes from the fact that they have darker spots on their body which makes them resemble that of a leopard. The population of the Northern Leopard Frog is quite stable in some areas while at others, the population is slowly declining.

In North America, the Leopard Frogs and be found in a large variety of habitats like forests, and marshlands. Normally, they will prefer an environment with steady, slow moving water. They are frogs with great adaptations, and can survive cold climates as they can be found at high elevations up on mountains. These frogs also will prefer the open land to the forests.

Just like most frogs, the male frogs are smaller than the female frogs although they have more padding on them. The Leopard Frog are greenish colored to a brown color with yellow or black dominant spots giving them the appearance of a leopard. If you were to flip them over, and examine their underside, you would notice that it contrasts the other side as it is white. Often, their undersides are also transparent as you should be able to see some parts. The Leopard Frog will grow up to an average of 3 inches or so.

The Leopard frog males, during mating season, need to attract a female in a common breeding area with their calls. They will normally breed only once in a year from March to June. As the females deposit their eggs, the males will hold onto the females and fertilize the eggs. A female can lay hundreds to thousands of eggs each time that are small, black and white. The eggs are laid in clusters, and attached to some of the submerged vegetation.

The tadpoles of the Leopard frogs, despite their name, are mainly herbivores and will eat small animal matter from the surface of the water, algae, and other vegetation. However, once they matured and metamorphosed into frogs, they will eat meat and insects like slugs, snails, earthworms, and frogs. Larger Leopard frogs may also eat smaller frogs like the Spring peepers.

The Leopard Frogs have many predators. For example, many fishes will take one of the adult frogs as a good and healthy snack. The eggs can be eaten by turtles and leeches while the tadpoles are generally preyed on by large bugs.

The Leopard frog has a positive impact on us; for one, the leopard frogs, mainly the frog legs, are eaten by humans. Also, they are commonly used as test subjects for many scientific experiments, and used in biology classrooms. Lastly, they can also indicate the water quality, and the quality of the environment.

The Leopard Frog is truly interesting specie of frogs to look at due to their difference with their species.
