Nose Surgery Explained

Mike Burnside
The medical term for altering the nose surgically for strictly cosmetic reasons is called rhinoplasty. Rhino meaning nose and plasty meaning to shape. When looking at anyone, you will see that the nose is the most central part of the face. If an individual has either a large or a disproportionate sized nose, this can take over the face and not look right.

Reasons for Having Nose Surgery
Obviously, changes in the nose can have a profound effect on the overall appearance of the face. A nose sometimes will have a large hump on the top of it, also called a dorsal hump. A surgeon can also reduce the size making it smaller and thinner, to improve the form of the nose as well. Some other common reasons for nose surgery or rhinoplasty are:

-Deviated nose
-Wide nose
-Crooked nose
-Long or short nose
-Bulbous tip
-Flaring nostrils
-Beaked nose
-Ski nose
-Pug nose

Most all of the above conditions can be corrected or significantly improved with nose surgery. If an individual has an airway problem usually from a deviated nose or an enlarged turbinate, then nose surgery can help to alleviate that.

The Benefits of Having Nose Surgery
Having nose surgery or rhinoplasty gives an individual a dramatic improvement in their self-confidence. The cosmetic enhancements as well as improve breathing are huge benefits to the nose surgery. A cosmetic surgeon who has the digital technology will help the patient in realizing what they need by showing them what is possible and what is not with nose surgery.

Good Candidates for Nose Surgery
Almost everyone is a good candidate for nose surgery. If a patient is self-conscious about the way their nose looks, then they can either have that corrected or drastically improved. There are instances where some individuals respond better to rhinoplasty than others. If you have thicker, oiler skin, the corrections are more difficult to accomplish. Thicker skin on the nose is less likely to show the changes that rhinoplasty would fix. However, a qualified plastic surgeon will be able to determine your skin thickness and whether it is an issue with nose surgery.

Recovery Time with Nose Surgery
After nose surgery, the swelling and bruising that accompanies the rhinoplasty will usually resolve itself within two weeks. If your employment is an office job with very little movement, many patients are back to work in three to five days after nose surgery. If your job involves strenuous activity, the patient can return in about a week.
