Easy Costumes That Look Great

Spirit of Autumn

Materials and Supplies:
One thin white cotton nightgown (or white cotton T-shirt and leggings)
Brown, orange and yellow fabric dye
Rubber kitchen gloves
Thick rubber bands
3 condiment squeeze-bottles
2 strands of autumn leaf garland
Long stick or staff
Gold ribbon
Twist ties
Plain white silk mask (half-mask, allowing the bottom of your face to show)
Silk autumn leaves
Hot glue gun

You're going to tie-dye your clothing in autumn colors. If you prefer and can find an outfit in autumn colors you can just use those and skip this step. Tie-dying is easier than you think, but you might want to do this outdoors in your yard or in a garage because it can get messy. Your fabric should be 100% cotton for best results. Pre-wash it and you're ready to begin.

Prepare each dye as recommended. Put each dye into a squeeze bottle. You will probably need to refill them as you go along, so keep the mixtures close. Grab bunches of your fabric and rubber band them tightly in random places. Holding it over a basin, squirt the dyes onto the fabric randomly. Try not to overlap the colors too much. Allow it to dry overnight.

Remove the bands and rinse the fabric in a basin of cold water. This, again, is best done outside. It helps to have a hose. Keep rinsing until the dyes stop bleeding out. Hang it to dry.

Take your staff and tie the end of one garland to the top with gold ribbon. Wrap the garland snake-like around the staff and tie it again where it leaves off with more ribbon.

Take the second garland and circle it like a wreath to fit on your head. Twist-tie it together in places so it maintains it's shape.

Take your mask and silk leaves. With a hot glue gun, glue leaves to the mask, radiating out from the eyes. Make sure none of the leaves cover the eyes. Keep overlapping them until they cover the mask.

Wear your dress, mask, head wreath and carry your staff to embody the spirit of the season.

Dark Goddess

Materials and Supplies:
Long black dress (or black blouse and skirt)
Long black hooded cape
Plastic Halloween shop scythe (long stick with a grey curved blade on top)
Dark blue face paint
White face paint
Black or blue eyeliner

Use the eyeliner marker to draw a large crescent moon on your face. It should begin on your forehead and curve it's way around the side of your face, ending on the chin. Color the inside of the moon white. Paint the rest of your face blue.

Put on the dress and cape, and carry the scythe.

Apparition

Long white flowing nightgown, preferably with long poofy or bell-shaped sleeves
White ballet slippers
White stockings
White face paint
Baby or translucent powder
Silver or white colored hair spray
Long white gloves (tapered-fingers preferred)
White press-on nails
Spray glitter or body shimmer

Prepare the gloves ahead of time. Put them on, and put the press on nails at the tips. Let them set. Don't put Crazy Glue on the gloves to put the nails on, as it will seep through the fabric and your fingers will be stuck inside the gloves.

Paint your face all white, and any part of your neck that is exposed. Rub it on with your fingers for a very thin coat. Apply powder with a clean make up-brush or powder puff to set the make up and avoid it being sticky. Spray your hair with silver or white coloring. Spray your face, hair, and neck with spray-on body glitter.

Dress in the nightgown, put on the stockings (spray those with body glitter as well if you like), ballet slippers, and finally the gloves.

  • If you don't want to tye-dye, find a dress or outfit in autumn colors
  • If you would rather not paint your face, find a crescent moon mask at a Halloween store
  • For a spooky apparition, use glow-in-the-dark white make-up
