Nostalgic, Old-Fashioned Candy Great for Sharing the Past with Kids

Sherry Tomfeld
When I was a kid we didn't eat very much candy. We also didn't have an allowance. We did, however, have a small grocery store that had shelves of "penny" candy. The most that candy cost was a nickel. Mom would look sternly at us and hand us each a penny or two. We were so excited! My grandparents loved candy and I'm sure part of the love I have for old-fashioned, nostalgic candy comes from all of these memories.

Bit-O-Honey

This was a tasty nutty flavored candy. It's very chewy and you could get it in bite size or candy bar size. This was definitely a penny candy that I enjoyed as often as I could with my penny!

Black Jack Taffy

Wrapped in its pink, white and black wrapper this candy was definitely a favorite. My first piece of Black Jack Taffy came from Grandpa. I loved the licorice tasting candy! It was a soft taffy and I remember my jaws hurting when I chewed too many of them!

Root Beer Barrels

This penny candy is a real old-fashioned candy. Root beer was a popular flavor years ago. Root Beer pop and candy were the "thing" back then. I liked root beer candy because it was really hard and would last a long time. I don't think a lot of kids today have even tasted root beer.

Chocolate covered Puff molasses Candy

This candy was also know by puff candy, sponge candy and fairy food. Call it what you will but this old-fashioned candy was a taste treat! It had a honeycomb of molasses inside that was crunchy and sweet. It was covered with chocolate. My grandma and grandpa always had this in their candy dish! It stuck to my teeth and I loved it!

Glee, Black Jack, Clove and Beemans gum!

Gum was something that I truly enjoyed when I was a kid. I was almost obsessed with it. I still am today! But gum from the past was made without as many additives. My favorites were Black Jack, Beemans, Clove and Glee. I still chew cinnamon Glee today. I had to have my hair cut because of an "incident" with the Black Jack gum!

The flavors and smells of these nostalgic, old-fashioned candies and gum can still make memories!

I still sell wax lips at my shop. Folks come in and ask; "Do they still smell the same?" Memories!

I love the nostalgic candy, there is a candy store not far from our home that sells the old fashioned candy and I really enjoy trying the different kinds!
