Not Everything Sells on Ebay

Learn from My Mistakes, the Description is a Key Factor

Roberk
I have been selling things on ebay for years. This past fall, I did not sell this particular item. Knowing that it couldn't have been "what" I was selling, I finally decided that it was the wording I used in the ebay description. So, the purpose of this article is to share with you what I wrote, so you won't make the same mistake when selling things on ebay.

You see, I came up with a wonderful craft (in my opinion) that I wanted to try. I used clay to encase an old Barbie doll. I was so pleased with the way she turned out, how realistic the clay encased head was sculpted and everything, that I thought I would put her up for auction on e-bay. I didn't even take notice when my best friend told me that she thought my pumpkin head Barbie looked creepy, almost scary and no one would buy her. In my mind, I thought she was a beautiful creation! I had 59 views and no bids. Probably 58 of those were from either me or my best friend. Here is the exact wording I used in the ebay ad description. This had to be why she did not sell.

Barbie went all out this year for Halloween...

Barbie decided this year no one would recognize her in this Halloween costume. She has worked very hard on her hand made mask, hand sewn costume with decorative trim, and even went through foot reconstruction so she would be able to stand all alone in her special, corrective Pumpkin shoes. She also went to the trouble of making permanent gloves and wrapped herself up so she wouldn't get cold.

Even though Barbie padded herself up under her costume, she can still bend, move and pose! If you look closely at her face, you will know its Barbie under her non-removeable mask. You can still see those gorgeous eyes.

Barbie is carrying her little Trick or Treat Bag, which is also handmade...

Anyone that Barbie comes to visit this Halloween had better Treat her well, because in the bottom of Barbie's bag are hidden two little items she might have to Trick you with!

This One-of-a-Kind Barbie would make a great addition to anyone's Halloween or Barbie Collection. The pictures really don't do her justice. She is very unique and even though her costume took awhile to make, it was so much fun to see it all come together.

Barbie's head and hands are permanently enclosed in air dry clay and her shoes are oven bake clay. All have been hand sculpted and hand painted with several coats of varnish on top. Her costume was designed and handmade by her helper, as well as her little Trick or Treat Bag. Any imperfections just add to the charm of her quaintness. She is not perfect...she is Pumpkin Head Barbie.

Barbie wanted me to tell you she LOVES this outfit and would like to go to your house this Halloween!

Thanks for Looking and Happy Bidding...

Happy Halloween!!!!

I leave the decision up to you, as to whether it was the wording that was wrong in trying to sell my wonderful Pumpkin head Barbie. If you really want to sell a product that is different, come up with a catchier description than I did. Learn from my mistake and remember, even when your best friend tells you something is stupid, creepy and scary to look at, don't listen. Try to sell it on ebay.

Did you personally really hand sew, hand paint, and hand sculpt this *wonderful* :-) creation? Can we say - too much time on our hands?!? You made my husband and I laugh. It could've been the wording - I think you scared too many buyers away with the threatening line about her trick bag. :-) :-)

Oh, and the trick or treat bag is crazy hilarious.

Frankly, I don't care about whether you sold it or not, I just think the description is absolutely hilarious!!! I would buy it from you just b/c of that! You and I share the same type of twisted humor.

Maybe you should keep listing it a little longer. It may eventually sell. Differnet people have different tastes, so you may eventually get that buyer who considers this a great steal. Great article!

I am curious how much you were selling it for? Maybe if you had started at a very low bid, barbie collectors would have been interested? I personally wouldn't have gone for it, as I don't collect them, but yes, I do find it a bit creepy, BUT unique.

I don't think Pumpkin Head Barbie will making any famous appearances in the near future! *grin*

Interesting Barbie. Will she be making an appearance on the Sci-Fi channel soon? :)
