NOT Making Money with Epinions.com

S. Ann
After reading an article here on AssociatedContent.com about www.epinions.com, I decided to give it a try. The writer claimed that anyone could make $100 or more writing short reviews on products everyone uses daily. It sounded simple enough. What I didn't know is how difficult it would be to earn even pennies from www.epinions.com and how it seemed almost impossible to earn anything close to $100 a month.

The Pros

To be fair, I will start will detailing the benefits of utilizing www.epinions.com. First, the site is really one that should be admired. It is extremely easy to use, whether you are writing an opinion or looking for a review on a product you are considering buying. You can easily find any product you are interested in, and see the reviews of others without problem.

The www.epinions.com site is free to use, which is also a great reason to visit it. With thousands of consumers reviewing products in every area of retail, you can bet you will be getting an honest consumer's opinion. There are no rules that say the reviews must be positive, so many reviewers are quite blunt, even when the review is not so nice!

The Cons

The main disadvantage to the www.epinions.com site is if you are trying to write reviews for payment. You can easily sign up to be a reviewer and the format for submitting a review is easy to utilize. Once you figure out the difference between an "express review" and a traditional review, you can be on your way to making money...or so you think.

After you submit a review, there are "advisors" who rate your review as being anything from "Very Helpful" to "Not Helpful At All". In addition, anyone who reads the review, whether they are advisors or not can rate your review. So, you are rating a product, and they are rating your review.

Here is where it gets tricky. The www.epinions.com site never really tells you how they determine how much money you will earn. They state they have a formula, but keep the formula quite secret. So, even after you get hundreds of visitors to your reviews, and handfuls of review ratings, you will still end up with making less than $1. The whole thing is quite shady, when it comes down to the logistics.

So, all in all, if you are looking for a way to make money online, you might not want to try www.epinions.com. Unless of course you are trying to develop better patience in life...because you will be waiting months to gain even the $10 minimum you need to cash out!

I hate epinions and it is all because of the rude "advisors there". I am a journalist who has been writing professionally for years. They had the nerve to rate an awesome review of mine as not helpful yet they rate others with "advisor status" as very helpful. It seems to me that those advisors are the only ones getting paid and since they keep voting down the new members articles we can never make any money. It's a shame that the Epinions site has been spoiled by these snobs. I wonder if they even know what is going on.

I've written a few dozen reviews on Epinions and have earned a bit over $400 total from them. Mind you that this is over a period of eight years so an average of roughly $50 a year from those 40+ reviews.

I don't really know if they are shady or not, but I have been at 9.59 cents for three months, and have not seen any increase even though I got more views. However, I wont cancel them out as a great site till I am sure.

At this point, I've made several thousand dollars writing for Epinions. However, I also have over 1100 reviews and have been working at it for six years. You can make money there, but you do have to work at it. Like anything else, it takes time and effort to be successful.

Epinions is not shady, but certainly doesn't seem to be a huge money maker. I've used it sporadically for several years now, and find it nothing more than a fascinating hobby that offers a few bucks here and there.

Whomever wrote 175 reviews, that just doesn't make sense. I've got about 50 reviews over four years, earning about $80.

of course electronics score big bucks... but they score bigger bucks here on this site.

I make $100-120 a month on Epinions, but then again I'm the third most prolific reviewer there.

The key to making cash there is reviewing electronics. HDTV's and Digital Cameras always score big bucks.

So true! I made about $12 after writing 175 reviews there. I brought my reviews here and made 20 times that much so far in far less time. Epinions is a shady web site, and they have some very rude members there who are total control freaks right out of an Ayn Rand novel .

I've never read of anyone making any significant amount of money on epinions, although the site has been around for years so epinions must definitely be making some cash.
