Okay, so yet another day of oatmeal got you down? Well, I am here to help spice up your morning meal so that you can enjoy it. Plain oatmeal is not my idea of a great breakfast. Some people will argue that if you add sugar and butter to it, you lose all the good benefits. My response to that is if the food isn't good then most folks won't eat it. I hope my suggestions will help you to not only enjoy your oatmeal, but also look forward to breakfast all over again! My additions are used with the quick cooking oats found in the tall canister in the breakfast food aisle of your grocery store.
- Use milk instead of water. The milk lends a bit of substance and taste to plain oatmeal.
- Add a pinch of salt to the bowl of oats before you nuke it in the microwave.
- Add some butter or margarine to your bowl. I know what some of you might say, but unless you have a heart condition or high cholesterol, then I'm sure just a tiny bit won't hurt.
- Add some cinnamon. This spice is often overlooked for its beneficial health attributes, and it tastes good.
- Add some fresh or frozen fruit to the oatmeal. The possibilities are endless when it comes to selection. You could use blueberries, raspberries, bananas, peaches, or apples. This also adds to your daily intake of fresh food, which would help balance the use of butter. See, there are ways to have your butter and eat it too!
- Add a spoonful of sugar to help the oatmeal go down. I am positive that it helps. You could even use brown sugar instead of white sugar to sweeten the oatmeal. Also, don't forget honey and maple syrup if that is more your speed.
- If you like nuts, add them. They are an excellent source of nutrition and they even have some of the healthy fat that our bodies need.
So when you go into the kitchen to make your next bowl of oatmeal, use some of my tips to add some flavor and richness to breakfast. And don't forget to add some orange juice on the side. Let me know how it turns out.
