Not so Lucky - 7 NFL Teams with 7 Wins, 7 Losses

None Stand a Chance at the Playoffs, Super Bowl

Most guys won't read an article about football that is written by a chick. But when it comes to football, I think I was born with the wrong anatomy. I love the game and can't get enough of the stats, the fantasy football, and making full on predictions about the games ahead. I even like to make the calls from the sidelines, and sometimes I think the coaches are listening (yeah right, we all like to think that huh?).

So after reviewing the standings this week, I noticed something a little interesting. The number 7 is anything but lucky in the NFL after week 15 of 2009 Preseason. There were 7 teams this week that reported winning only 50% of the games played this season. With 14 games behind them they have 7 wins and 7 losses.

The Miami Dolphins were anything but consistent this year winning 7 games against the Bills, 2 against the Jets, the Bucs, the Panthers, the Patriots and Jaguars. Their losses included games against the Falcons, the Colts, the Chargers, the Saints, the Patriots, the Bills, and the Tennessee Titans. I found it interesting that they won and lost against the same teams. They have been all over the place this year with little predictability.

The New York Jets, with a 7 and 7 record also started off the year great until they lost against the Saints. Their wins include games against the Texans, the Patriots, the Titans, the Raiders (who couldn't score on them at all), the Panthers, the Bills, and the Bucs. Their losses after the Saints included the Dolphins (2 games lost), the Bills, the Jaguars, the Patriots, and the Falcons.

Another 7 and 7 split belongs to the Pittsburg Steelers. The Steelers were strong at the beginning of the season until their bye week. Then they had a 5 game losing streak they finally broke out of against the Green Bay Packers in the week 15. Their 5 consecutive losses were against the Broncos, the Bangles, the Chiefs, the Ravens, the Raiders, and the Browns. Earlier in the year they lost 2 other games against the Bears and the Bangles. Their winning games in addition to the Packers were the Titans, the Chargers, the Lions, the Browns, the Vikings, and the Broncos.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans, all in the AFC South, have the same record with 7 wins and 7 losses but were surpassed by the perfect 14 and 0 Indianapolis Colts. All three teams lost 2 games against the Colts, and the Titans were the only team that could beat the Cardinals so far while the Jags and Texans lost to Arizona.

The Atlanta Falcons are the only team in the NFC that is sitting with the unlucky 7 and 7 split. With their schedule, it is no wonder they are there. They lost half their games to some really tough teams to include 2 games against the Saints, one against the Cowboys and the Eagles, and also losing to the Panthers, the Patriots, and the Giants. They did win against the Dolphins, the Panthers (one game), the 49ers, the Redskins, the Bucs, the Jets, and the Bears.

After looking at the overall stats for each team, it is my prediction that none of these teams will make the playoffs.

I announced my playoff predictions early this year, on December 2, 2009. You can read that article "Could the Vikings Take on the Saints and Then the Colts to Win Super Bowl XLIV?"
