1. Choose Your Bulbs Mindfully
When selecting your bulbs you will want to choose large, single headed units that show no sign of rot or disease. You can tell by the texture, color and even smell of the bulb. Do not choose bulbs that have already started to Sprout. The bigger bulbs are generally older meaning they are more likely to bloom next Spring due to maturity.
2. Don't Plant Too Late In The Year
Have all your bulbs planted no later than December. You're bulbs need at least 12 weeks in the ground if you want them to bloom and you have to do it before the ground freezes. Generally October is the best month to plant your basic Spring bulbs in the fall. However some bulbs are not suggested to plant until almost the end of November.
3. Plant Deep, But Not Too Deep
You want to plant your bulbs close to between two to three times deeper than the bulbs is in depth. You will want to sow your plant in a random selections as opposed to a row or cluster. Most common bulbs need a good well drained soil to properly live up to their maximum potential.
4. Protect Your Bulbs From Predators
You can do this easily by surrounding your bulbs in a little cage or chicken wire before planting them. Do this loosely around the circumference of the bulb giving it room to sprout. I have even heard of old farmer's tales of using tobacco extract juices or bear mace on the ground and soil surrounding the bulbs to keep animals at bay.
5. Follow Planting Instructions
Read the package for your bulbs along with following the tips from this article and you will be fine. You will generally want to plant the bulbs with the tipped end upwards. If you cannot distinguish which end is which, you will want to plant them on their sides.
6. Allow A Prime Environment For The Roots To Grow
You will want to remember to make holes before planting with loose soil surrounding the outer edge of the hole for air and water to have access to your bulbs. This will help your roots grow plentiful and have room to grow while getting the nutrients they need.
7. Keep Sun Placement In Mind
You will want to plant your bulbs in a mainly sunny area with not too much shade. Keep in mind distances from the sun throughout the day. Always follow instructions for the correct type of flower bulbs to get more accurate directions for your fall planting.
8. Know Your Bulbs
After purchasing your fall bulbs to plant for next Spring's blooming garden you will want to research what you are dealing with to maintain ideal growing conditions. This in fact comes in handy before purchasing so you can find the suitable flowers for your garden position. For example true sun loving bulbs include Tulips and Iris flowers while more shade tolerant bulbs include Bluebell's, Lily of The Valley, Daffodils and Hyacinth flowers.
9. For Best Effects
If you want a stunning garden next Spring then plant your bulbs in a large area full of a variety of bulbs all randomly spaced yet with an algorithm to them. This will give you a range of colors, textures and gorgeous flowers covering the planted area creating the perfect garden. The bigger, the larger amount of bulbs, the more range in flowers, the better!
