Nothing

Michelle Evans

It's a quiet evening on the other side of the universe, and you are stuck to the television as usual. You have completed your daily routine; wake up, eat, watch television, eat, watch television, watch television. The phone rings, you hear the voicemail: "It's Mom. Why won't you ever speak to me anymore? Are you doing anything with your life?" But you continue on your daily routine. Eat, watch television, eat, eat, television, television. Except, this time, a change is about to be made.

You hold a cassette in your hand of a movie that you have watched every day for the past 2 years. You usually make sure to pay attention to every little detail, to make sure you are enjoying the movie in complete bliss, and learn something out of the movie. You walk to your television. You put the tape into the VCR. You wait. The movie comes on. You begin to watch it. However, this time is different. You are being distracted by the smaller things in the movie. You cannot enjoy the movie because you don't know its"big picture." You haven't learned anything. There is nothing that you have got out of the movie.

So you decide to do something logical. You think, "I was distracted. I made a mistake. I can fix my mistake." Logical. Rational. Smart. You walk up to the television. You stand in front of it for a second. You make a move. Your finger moves to the television. It reaches for the button "rewind." You press the button "rewind." Nothing. You are confused. You reach your finger for the button again. You press the button "rewind" again. Nothing. Now you are getting frustrated. You hit the television. As if it is it's fault. As if hitting it will do anything. You press the button again. Nothing. You scream in anger. You hit the button "rewind" so many times that it is about to break off the television. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

Nothing.
