Sources close to the case say that one of her legs has been amputated, the other paralyzed, and that her condition is very grave. Previous reports that her request has been approved by the California State Board of Parole are not true. She has however, been transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
Atkins, who is now 60, has been incarcerated for 37 years, longer than any other female inmate in California history. Since her incarceration she has became a born-again Christian and has married twice. In 1981 she married a self-proclaimed Texas millionaire who had been married 35 times before. If that wouldn't send up red flags and have Loser written all over it, I don't know what does. That marriage ended when he decided to marry again. Talk about dumb and dumber.
In 1987, Atkins married Orange County attorney James W. Whitehouse, who currently represents her.
A mother herself, (she gave birth to a son in 1968 at the Manson hideout) she viciously killed an expectant mother, that being Sharon Tate. Tate begged for her life, pleading with to Atkins, "please let me live so I can have my baby." Atkins replied, "I don't have mercy for you...you're going to die." I just don't understand how someone who is a mother herself kill another human being who is pregnant. Could it have been the drugs, brain-washing, anger, who knows.
What, now she wants mercy? Are you kidding me? Well, it turns out that the parole board at Corona have denied her request for compassionate release. The 12 member board voted unanimously to deny Atkins' request. Members of the board heard testimony from Atkins' supporters as well as supporters of the victims that died that fateful night in 1969.
California tax payers have already paid $1.4 million for medical care and security since Atkins has been hospitalized earlier this year. Seems that money is not an issue. Perhaps in light of the burdening cost to the taxpayers she should be released. After all she's most definitely not a threat to any one and all that money could be used for a more beneficial purpose, such as education.
Had the death penalty not been abolished years ago she would already have been executed, perhaps, thereby averting the cost of not only her incarceration and medical care, but also the agonizing suffering Atkins will endure as her illness progresses. In the end we can say that there really is justice. If not legal justice, then justice from the man above. Wonder what Atkins will say when she meets her maker? Wonder what she will say when she meets her victims, if she makes it that far?
