Not-so-Usual Easter

Ambrosia Jefferson
Easter is when families come together and celebrate spring, religion, and of course eggs and candy! With a few exceptions my family was never overly religious, so perhaps the religious parts of Easter were lost on us. But we sure did know how to make it an interesting event.

Most Easter days started out with deciding what to wear! I being the odd little bunny that I was generally chose to wear something different, an outfit circa 1776, something more suited for Christmas, and you follow the idea. Great Gran bless her heart loved the fact, and called me unique, even when I continued to do such things as a teen, and now an adult. Next up of course was the egg hunt; we had dyed eggs of every color you could wish for, purple, green, and red, orange, yellow, stripes and Polka Dots! The adults hid dozens upon dozens of those colorful little stinkers and every year without fail we would gather them all up, and than fork them back over to the adults, because who wants to eat a boiled, dyed egg when you can have a Cadbury egg right?

The Cadbury egg was of course the sought after Easter treat, or whatever happened to be in your basket. Finding of the baskets was done after the egg hunt, and was done blindfolded; it made it a little harder of course, but also made it more fun. Once all the eggs and all the candy had been found it was time to sit down for dinner. Easter dinner for us was probably like it is for most people, which was one part that was not so unusual. We had Ham, mashed taters, assorted vegetables, and buns, butter all the trimmings! But the real treat was always Great Gran's Key Lime Pie, homemade graham cracker, cream cheese heaven.

So the food has been eaten, naps are surely pending, what does the family do next? One might think watch some sport, or something Easter related on television. Not my family. We watched it's a wonderful life, oh yes the one your thinking, the one that normal people watch for Christmas. Well I never did say my family was normal, but we had fun, and watching a movie everyone knew was meant for Christmas, at Easter time gave us all a little bit of a giggle. And really, with spring time in the air, snow melting, birds singing, bunnies romping out in the garden, It Is a wonderful life at Easter time.
