If you really want to celebrate this day like a holiday where you do not work, find yourself a restaurant that makes and serves deviled eggs. Go out with family or friends, order deviled eggs, and indulge. Perhaps you would rather buy some pre-made deviled eggs from the grocery store and bring them back to a house for a gathering.
However, if you want to celebrate this day like a holiday where you do work, make deviled eggs. The best part about making the deviled eggs means that you get to eat them! If you do not know how to make deviled eggs, here is a recipe that you can easily follow.
The first thing you need to do is hard boil the eggs.
Use eggs that are one or two weeks old for the best peeling results. You may want to rest the eggs on their sides overnight before hard boiling them. This will help to center the yolks. Remove the eggs from the fridge thirty minutes before you start cooking them. This will reduce the shock in temperature change and reduce cracks. After the thirty minutes is up, place the eggs in a pot where they fit inside and do not bump into each other. Any type of pot can be used.
Fill the pot with cold water. Make sure the water is just about one inch above the eggs. Set the pot on the burner and cover it with a tight fitting lid. Then turn the burner to high. Let the water come to a full boil, watching carefully. The second that the water comes to a full boil, move the pot off of the burner and onto another burner. Make sure that you use pot holders as the pot will be extremely hot.
After moving the pot, sprinkle one teaspoon of salt into the water. Do not stir. Let the eggs sit in the water for another half hour. They will finish cooking.
Just a bit before the half hour has finished, prepare a bowl of ice water. Once the half hour is finished, go to the pot and quickly remove the eggs and put them into the bowl of ice water. This is so they cool quickly and the green ring around the yolk will not form. Leave the eggs in the water for about 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes it is now time to peel the eggs. Do these steps for every egg until they are all peeled. Take the egg out of the bowl. Give it a few very gentle taps on a hard, flat surface. Do this at different spots of the shell until the shell has small cracks on all of its surface.
If you have a garbage disposal (often labeled in in-sink aerator) in your sink, you can do this over that basin. If you do not, you will want to put a bowl under the faucet. Run cold water. Pick up the egg between your hands and roll it back and forth. The shell should easily come off. Place the egg in a bowl or in an egg carton or dish made for holding deviled eggs. Rinse the eggs in cold water to make sure no more shell is on the eggs. Let the freshly peeled eggs cool in the refrigerator for a half hour.
It is now time to make the deviled eggs.
Use a knife with a straight edge, such as a paring knife, to cut straight through the center of each egg. Make sure you cut horizontally through the egg on the long side and not the other way. Return the eggs to the container where they are being held.
Get a bowl. Squeeze the egg halves so the yolks pop out and into the bowl. If the yolks do not easily pop out of the whites (now called shells and they are not the same as the shells that were originally on the eggs), you can use a small spoon to ease the yolks out of the shells. The yolks should be in the bowl and the shells should be back in their holding container.
There are many different recipes for deviled eggs. These can be found online. Assemble all the ingredients and equipment that you will need to complete the recipe.
Mash the egg yolks with a fork. They will seem dry and powdery, but this is completely normal. You want to make sure that there are no large lumps.
Mix the rest of the ingredients together with the egg yolks. Make sure that they are mixed well. Make sure that the filling is not too oozy as it needs to be firm to sit in the eggs.
Now you can either spoon the filling into the shells, put the filling into a pastry bag and fill the shells, or make a bag like a pastry bag out of a sandwich bag and fill the shells.
You can now bring the eggs to a gathering or sit and eat them by yourself. If you want, you may want to buy a special dish for displaying deviled eggs before making them if you do not already have one.
Have a happy Deviled Egg Day!
