Preview of What's Coming to the Cinema

Robin Vinci
November movies will soon be here and with it comes holiday and end of the world movies. There are also some comedies, part two of a huge 2008 hit and several animated features. Here is a quick peak at what is coming.

A Christmas Carol

Are you ready for Christmas? Jim Carrey will bring you another holiday classic in the way only he can. He will play Ebenezer Scrooge and the three ghosts. This is a Robert Zemeckis production also starring Bob Hoskins, Colin Firth and Robin Wright Penn.

A don't miss holiday lovers film.

It will be released November 6.

The Box

This film is a supernatural thriller starring Cameron Diaz as a young woman who receives a square device. She is told that different things will happen depending on what button she presses. The device leads her on a dangerous and mysterious path. Director Richard Kelly adapted the script from a story by Richard Matheson.

I was unable to see previews on this one but it sounded interesting enough to mention.

Opens November 6.

Men Who Stare At Goats

The name sounds strange for this Overture Films production but is a drama with a few laughs. George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges star. "McGregor plays a journalist in Iraq who meets a soldier involved with the U.S. military's paranormal unit. The reporter gets the story of his lifetime as he uncovers the use of psychic powers in the military. Grant Heslov directs with Peter Straughan adapting from the book by Jon Ronson," according to hsx.com.

Previews look very enticing.

It opens November 6.

2012

Many believe, based on the Mayan calendar, on December 21, 2012 the world will end. This film directed by Roland Emmerich is based on that apocalypse premise that may occur. It is pretty grim and scary but has great special effects.

Stars John Cusack and Amanda Peet.

Previews look very good.

Opens November 13.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

This is the next movie based on the 2008 classic The Twilight.

"After Edward breaks up with Bella to keep her safe from other vampires, Bella dates Jacob, who turns out to be a werewolf," according to hsx.com. "Melissa Rosenberg returns to adapt the second book from the Stephenie Meyer series. Chris Weitz takes over directing duties."

Any real fan should not miss it.

Opens November 20.

Planet 51

You didn't think a month would go by without several fun animated movies?

This first one is based on a human astronaut that crash lands on a distant planet where he befriends a young alien. He tries to figure out how to get back to earth but life on the planet becomes chaotic. The film is produced by Spain's Ilion Animation Studios and Jorge Blanco directs it with a script from Joe Stillman.

Previews look great.

Opens November 20.

The Blind Side

This football drama movie stars Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Kathy Bates.

It is based on a book by Michael Lewis which examines how a prospect, a left tackle, is prepared for the NFL The film is written and directed by John Lee Hancock.

I was unable to see previews but I usually enjoy movies starring Bullock so keep an eye out for it.

Opens November 20.

Old Dogs

This comedy stars John Travolta and Robin Williams. Their lives are turned upside down when they become guardians of a set of twins. They both have other interests but some things must change.

Travolta's seven-year-old daughter Ella and wife Kelly Preston co-star in the film. Walt Becker directs the script from David Diamond and David Weissman.

This movie looks kind of silly to me in previews.

Opens November 25.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Another animated film. This one is about three not so bright farmers who want to do away with a wily fox and his family who are constantly stealing the farm's chickens and geese. The fox cannot be outfoxed. His sneaky antics allow him to survive the assault and help other hunted animals.

Stars the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Willem Dafoe.

Previews look cute and family oriented.

It opens for limited release November 12 and for wide release November 25.

Those are the top movies opening in November. Opening dates are subject to change. So check them out and don't forget the popcorn.
