November 2nd is Look for Circles Day

Bridget Ilene Delaney
November 2 is not a day for Telly from Sesame Street! His favorite shape is a triangle. Rather, November 2 celebrates the circle! It is Look for Circles Day!

Circles are not hard to find. They are found everywhere! That's what makes the day a lot of fun.

Here are some ideas for how to celebrate "Look for Circles Day."

Have a Scavenger Hunt

Set off a certain area (perhaps it is one yard, one campus, or bigger a bigger area like a few city blocks) and look for circles either as big group or as separate small groups and record the findings. Make sure to record the findings and discuss them after the hunt is finished.

Eat Circular Foods

Eat foods that are in circles. Pancakes are circles. Doughnuts are circles. Bagels are circles. Cheerios are circles. If you really must eat foods that are not circles, cut them into circles! Do not ruin the spirit of the day. That way other who are playing "Look for Circles" games can include your food!

Have a Circle Finding Competition

Set a starting time and an ending time. With friends, write down as many circles that you see during that time period. After the time period has stopped, get together with friends and see who saw the most circles. To make the competition more exciting, cross out the same circles that you saw, or similar incidences like "the tires on a car."

Make it More Complicated to Find Circles

If you are playing "Look for Circles" games with your friends, perhaps you need to make the game a bit more complicated. Whenever you would usually use a circle, use a box or a star. Make it more difficult for people to find circles than it would usually be. However, be nice to children playing the game. Only do this for teens and adults that would understand the humor in the situation.

Find Circles in Odd Places

Look for circles where they may not usually be found. Bridges are structurally supportive when they are made with triangles. Search for circles on bridges. Open a geometry book to a chapter about triangles. Try to find circles there.

Make Circles

If nothing else appeals or if you really do not live in a place where circles are seen (which must be quite odd), make circles! Draw circles! Cut out circles! Use circle hole punches to make tiny circle confetti! If you do play some of the games, use the circle confetti to celebrate the winner!

Is this a real day? If so, why isn't there time from work to look for those pesky circles?
