My name is Bianca Smith. I'm 29 years old. I have a husband named Sam and a 5 year old boy named Bobby. I live in the Big Apple. I'm a doctor at New York University Medical Center. I used to love my life. I used to love waking up and breathing the fresh air outside my two story. But now all I breath is death and destruction.
It all started on November 4, 2009. President Joe Cain has been in the office for one year and everything is following apart. The economy is worse than ever. Gas is up to $9 dollars a gallon. Hundreds of businesses are closing down. Thousands of people are unemployed. The stock market crashed again. People are struggling to survive. Somehow, my family are getting by even though Sam lost is job two months ago. He still is having a hard time finding a job. We joke about how his new job is being a stay at home dad. He mostly takes care of Bobby while I work grueling hours at the hospital. Crime has risen as the economy worsens. Everybody is fighting over money, shelter, food, and clothing. The other day a man came in with a pencil stuck in the center of his hand. He said that he was eating dinner with his brother. He reached over for an extra roll, and his brother stabbed his hand with a pencil.
It gets weirder.
A man walks into NYU Medical Center with a basic cough on November 2, 2009. He says that he thinks that he just has a cold but he can't stop coughing. It looks like a basic cold but he said he had it for about two weeks now. He has taken every known cold medicine alive. So we run our tests. We find out that he has AIDS. We put him on antiretroviral drugs. But he continued to get worse. He died of respiratory failure due to AIDS at 11:59pm on November 4, 2009. The next day my collagen and the primary doctor of the patient with AIDS, comes into work complaining about his head and chest. He had a horrible cough so we told him to get the some rest and come back the next day rejuvenated. He did came back the next day. But he was not rejuvenated. He came back to the hospital on a stretcher. He was as pale as a ghost. He looked like a skeleton. He had lost about fifty pounds. He had blisters all over his face. He was coughing blood everywhere. He had a temperature of 126. We hooked him to an IV. It was like nothing we have every seen. He was okay one day and dying the next day. We ran some test and found out that he had AIDS. We were all shocked because he is married with five children. As we begin to put him on antiretroviral drugs, people fill up the hospital with complaints about sudden head aches, burning throats, nonstop bleeding noses, coughing blood, bloody stool, fevers, swollen glands, and sudden appearance of blisters. We run our test and find out that each one of these people have AIDS. We immediately contacted the Centers for Disease Control for help. They sent us the following:
From: Centers For Disease Control
To: New York University Medical Center
The human immunodeficiency virus has mutated. HIV can now be transmitted by air. This is an aggressive form of the virus. It seems that antiretroviral drugs are useless. We are doing everything we can to create an antiretroviral drug or even a cure strong enough to fight this new strand of the virus. The disease is mutating even worse each second it is present in the patient. We recommend you test everybody for HIV, even yourselves. The doctors and nurses who are not positive, we recommend you all quarantine yourselves.
We promise to give more information in the upcoming days.
Sincerely,
Randall Flagg
Centers For Disease Control
So we tested everybody, including ourselves, for HIV. Fifty percent of the staff had HIV. Thirty percent of the staff already develop AIDS. That leaves twenty percent of us fit enough to take care and try to treat the ones who are dying. We put on quarantine suits and masks to protect us from getting sick ourselves. We ran test. We try to create new antiretroviral drugs. We try to do everything we could to save our friends and family. But at the end of November 5th 2009, the hospital was filled with the dead. Everybody who comes in contact with HIV develops AIDS at a rapid pace. The mutation of AIDS is so aggressive that it kills in less than five hours. We have witness the patients who had this new mutation of AIDS of coughing blood, having drastic weight loss, developing blister all over their bodies, going blind, pissing blood, having bloody stool, vomiting nonstop, eruption of blood vessels and eyeballs, losing hair, finger/toe nails, and teeth, losing hearing, and losing basic motor functions. Basically, everybody is dissolving before our eyes in one day.
Throughout November the 4th and 5th I kept in contact with Sam and Bobby. I told them to stay in the house. Do not leave. Do not take Bobby to school. Do not go to work. Just stay where you are. I will be home soon.
At the hospital, there were only fourteen doctors and ten nurses who did not have HIV or AIDS. They all wanted to go home and be with their families. But the moment we open the doors of the hospital to the outside world, all we see and smell is death and decay. There were bodies everywhere. The young and the old were all lying dead on the streets of New York. There were bodies covered with blood. There were bodies missing eyeballs and tongues. There were so many bodies that we all had to walk to our houses. We still had on our quarantine suits to protect ourselves.
Once I reached my house, I quickly ran inside. I embraced my husband and son. They were overjoyed to see me. I took off my suit and told them that everything will be okay. I knew that everything wouldn't be okay. Nothing will be okay ever again.
That night, me and my husband Sam, were so happy to see be together again that we made love. But while we were making love I notice a blister on Sam's lower abdomen. Sam said that it was nothing. But I knew better. I tested him for HIV the next morning. He was positive. I tested our son and myself again but we were both negative. Sam had HIV but we didn't. The only way that can be is if my son and me were both immune to the disease. Sam was going to die. I turn on the television hoping to hear that they found a cure.
Every channel showed Sara Malin talking to the people who were still alive.
This is what she said:
"I have some sad news today. The President of the United States died this morning from this horrible disease. As of right now, I am your new president. I promise you that we will find a cure. I advise each and everyone of you still alive to stay in your homes. Do not go out for any reason at all. This is just a setback for the United States of America. I promise you to update you once we get more information about this disease."
As the cameraman turns off his camera, a man in a dark color suit walks up to Sara Malin.
"We have found a cure!" He says.
"I knew that we would. The American people can do anything if we put our minds to it. How fast can we administrate this cure to the American people?" She asks.
"In a couple of days. We only have enough vaccine for ten percent of the population. It will take us a day or two to make a larger quantity." He says.
"So you only have enough for ten percent? Four of my children are sick with this disease. My son is in Iraq expose to who knows what! I order you to give them and each person of the White House the vaccine." She said.
"But Mrs. Malin, if we give everybody in the White House and your family the vaccine then we will be unable to create more for about a few weeks or even a month." He said.
"I do not care. All I care about is my family. The American people will survive somehow. We always do. Now follow my orders or will I have to find somebody else who will?" She says.
"Okay, Mrs. Malin. Do you want to be the first to get the vaccine or shall I start with your kids?" He asks.
"Yes. Give me the vaccine." She says.
The man in the dark suit walks over to Sara Malin and takes a syringe from his briefcase. Sara Malin moves her sleeve up. The man injects her with the vaccine. The man turns and look out the window behind them. He sees thousands of dead bodies lying in front of the White House. He see mothers holding onto their children. Husbands hugging their wives. He realized that the human race is damned.
