When the chill hits those blazing Southern cities for the first time in November the big racing events begin to show up: the month of November features no less than twenty marathon events in the United States with many or most of the full marathons accompanied by half-marathons and some also have ten kilometer and five kilometer races. Some also have one mile kids races.

From Indianapolis in the Midwest to the Grand Canyon in the far West and from coastal New York city to a now chilled Atlanta you will see roads closed and runners breathing the now cool air to prove something to themselves. Maybe they were dared to lose weight and this was their path to do that. Oldsters in their fifties--like me--still like to see these people run and the enthusiasm is great for couchers. I'm active at fifty one and envision myself running in one of these events again. Some people have never stopped running because it simply works for their schedule and their personality. Competitive long distance runners from colleges, universities, and track clubs compete to win money and to qualify for other races such as the Boston Marathon which requires a qualifying race to narrow the huge number of entrants to a manageable horde.

New York City hosts the most visible marathon of November--the ING New York City Marathon--which draws huge crowds of onlookers and a huge number of runners from everywhere in the United States and everywhere in the world as a matter of fact. There is big prize money handed out for the top runners and there is also a wheelchair race for serious wheelchair athletes. Atlanta hosts a big marathon late in November--the Atlanta Marathon and Half-Marathon. Richmond, Virginia has a multi-race event in mid-November --the Sun Trust Richmond Marathon--which also has smaller races enveloped in it. Dallas, Texas has a half-marathon--the Dallas Running Club Half Marathon--in early November. Carmel, California hosts the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterrey Bay on the second weekend of November. The Philadelphia Marathon takes place on the third weekend of November in the City of Brotherly Love. Portsmouth, New Hampshire hosts the Seacoast Half Marathon on the third weekend of November. In Tulsa, Oklahoma there is the Williams Route 66 Marathon on the third weekend of November. The second weekend of November finds Pensacola Florida hosting the Pensacola Marathon. Music lovers are invited to San Antonio to see the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon on the second weekend of November.

There are more marathons to read about and to attend...I have them listed below. Check out the hyperlinks to the sites to find out about results for races and schedules for upcoming races.

Running races are great fan events that you can get right up close to the action and feel like you're participating. Cheer on your siblings, your parents, or your friends or just go and have fun. It's a blast!
