The book is a republishing of Simmons' columns from 1998-2005 as he follows his favorite team from Boston. It is a true journey of passion, pain, suffering and as we all know the ultimate triumph. What is unique about this book is the feel of a day to day lifestyle of a fan. We can see the ups as Boston pulls close to the World Series in 1999 and 2003 before the Yankees halt their quest. By republishing archived columns, we get the true emotion of the moment instead of a retelling. What Simmons felt moments after the game, we can relive with him. As a Cubs fan, this especially hits home because many of the struggles and questioning of why it will all be worth it some day have been felt by me.
Along with the day-to-day feel this book allows us to experience, there are also 500 footnotes added to the columns. If you have ever read Simmons he is witty and entertaining and does not disappoint in this book. Even though this book was produced in 2005, many of his references hold up and can still be enjoyed today. I love this book for the extra mile the author went by adding the footnotes to the old columns.
Overall, this book is a must read for any sports fan, especially the ones of long suffering teams. It is hilarious, emotional and a true representation of what it means to be a die hard fan of a team that can put you through so much. And if your favorite team has not won in a while, it might give you some hope that your day is around the corner.
