Now on DVD: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Steve Helmer

Synopsis: As Lord Voldemort and his followers gain power in the wizard world, Harry, Hermione and Ron continue their search for the Horcruxes while trying to learn how to destroy the items once they are in their possession.

What I liked about this movie: One thing that really impressed me about this film was the special effects. Granted, I probably should have expected that considering they were pretty strong in previous movies too. But, there were times when the special effects really stole the scene; especially when Harry and Hermione are attacked by that basilisk.

I also liked the emphasis on emotions throughout the movie. The three friends are on an adventure but are in constant danger and have no idea if their friends and family are safe. That does add quite a bit to the drama and the range of emotions expressed was somewhat surprising too; mostly because you don't normally see that in movies like this.

What I didn't like about this movie: This was a pretty long movie, which is why it was released in two parts. However, there are a lot of scenes in this movie that are drawn out and have very little importance to the main storyline. I know this is aimed toward fans of the book and they probably are a bit more accepting of it. But, the reality is, they could have cut about an hour's worth of scenes from this movie without having a major impact on the plot.

The part with the amulet Horcrux (the fact it was evil, couldn't be destroyed easily and had mood altering abilities) also seemed a bit too much like something out of Lord of the Rings. I'm not accusing J.K. Rowling of "borrowing" something from that set of books/movies or anything like that. But, I do feel the need to take away some points for lack of originality.

Final Opinion: I loved Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone but have liked each movie a bit less each time. Unfortunately, while an OK film, this movie continued that trend and, even though I do plan on watching Part 2, I think I'll wait until it's on DVD rather than seeing it at the theater.

Average Netflix Grade: 4.3 stars out of a possible 5.

My Grade: 3 stars.
