Now on DVD: Passengers

Steve Helmer
We got the movie Passengers through Netflix a couple weeks ago. But, since my wife had to fly out east and we felt watching a movie about a plane crash wasn't the smartest thing to do before she traveled, we held off watching it until this weekend.

While not the best movie I ever watched, it still ended up being entertaining.

I have always though Anne Hathaway is better in less dramatic roles like Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted. But, she does a decent job playing a therapist placed in charge of a group of passengers that survived a fatal plane crash. During her group therapy, she learns that, while the official cause of the crash was pilot error, the passengers all remember an explosion prior to crashing. When she brings this up, she is met with resistance and suspects some sort of a cover up; especially when her patients start disappearing.

I will say I found myself somewhat disappointed by this film. When I picked it out, I expected some suspense from it (someone trying to kill her, someone stalking her, etc) and there really wasn't. Most of the movie, in fact, is her running the group therapy sessions, accusing various officials of wrong doing and sleeping with one of her patients.

In saying that, I will admit, under most circumstances, I probably would have turned this movie off. But, while the beginning of the film does seem to drag on a bit, I still found myself interested in what would happen next. The reason is, as I was watching, I began to suspect there was something else going on and began waiting for the unforeseen twist. When it came, it wasn't anything overly surprising (the film drops a hint about it earlier in the movie) but it was decent and was glad I took the time to finish the film.

Final opinion: This isn't Hathaway's best work. But, it still proved to be a somewhat entertaining film that is worth taking the time to watch; but probably not when you are planning on flying anywhere.

Average Netflix Grade: 3.2 stars out of a possible 5.

My Grade: 3 stars.
