Now on DVD: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything

Steve Helmer
Synopsis: This Veggie Tales movie stars Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape as three bus boys who are sent back in time to help rescue a royal family from pirates.

What I liked about this movie: I primarily got this for my daughter to watch but found it was entertaining enough for adults to enjoy too.

Much like other Veggie Tale episodes and movies, this film uses comedy and easy-to-relate-to characters to teach an important lesson of how anyone can be a hero as long as they are willing to do the right thing.

The characters in this film are very memorable; from the pirate captain who terrorizes the seas with his mechanical body and various contraptions to the rock monsters that turn out to be a lovable family once you get to know them.

The plot of this film is well thought out and moves at a fast enough pace where you don't get a chance to be bored.

What I didn't like about this movie: This is nitpicking a bit, but some scenes in this movie do have a bit more violence that I'm used to from this franchise. Since it's a pirate movie, there's obviously going to be sword fighting and naval battles and that's forgivable. But, there's also a scene where they are visiting a tavern and the pirates are dropping stuff on each other's feet and knocking each other over. And, they make it look like so much fun; I do think some kids might try to imitate it. Unlike many parents, I have enough common sense to talk to my daughter about not repeating the things she sees in movies and TV. But, because of the Veggie Tale label, I'm a bit surprised I had to have that talk.

Final opinion: It's not Pirates of the Caribbean but Pirates who Don't do Anything is definitely a film that is worth getting; both for your kids to watch and for you to watch with them.

On a scale from one to 10: I'm going to give this movie a 10.
