Now on DVD: Private Resort

Steve Helmer
Synopsis: Two young men visit a Florida resort hoping to meet women. Unfortunately for them, they find themselves having to contend with everything from a jewel thief to an overzealous security guard.

What I liked about this movie: Every once in a while, I'll take the time to watch a film made in the 1980s or early 1990s (this one was made in 1985) just because you get a chance to see stars before they were well-known.

This movie, for example, has a list of actors that includes Johnny Depp before 21 Jump Street, Hector Elizondo before Pretty Woman, Princess Diaries and Monk, Andrew Dice Clay when he was still known as Andrew Clay and Rob Morrow 20 years before starring on the TV show Numb3rs.

Most importantly, the movie is hilarious. Every time you think Depp and Morrow have finally succeeded in meeting women, something happens and they find themselves fleeing for their lives or hiding naked in a closet. Elizondo really steals the show though considering he's the victim of numerous slapstick gags.

And, for those of you who are interested in this sort of thing, my wife and I were even able to create a fun drinking game based on this movie; take a drink every time Depp changes outfits or takes off a piece of clothing.

What I didn't like about the movie: There's this one young kid early on in the film that spends his time trying to look at women's breasts. He probably would have been funny if he wasn't so annoying and I was glad he wasn't in more than the first few minutes of the movie.

Final opinion: Sometimes we get so caught up in seeing the newest release we forget there might be older films out there that we haven't seen yet. This movie is a good example of why you should take the time to check out the older movies every once in a while.

On a scale from one to 10: I would give the movie a 9.
