NOW (National Organization for Women) or (National Organization for Whimps)

Tortured, Raped and Imprisoned Women Need Help NOW

Sherry Tomfeld
National Organization for Women; Many women would dispute what exactly the role of NOW is in today's world. NOW seems to have become totally irrelevant, especially in light of the latest world headline story of Gillian Gibbons.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) said they would not put out a statement or take a "stand" in the Gillian Gibbon's arrest. Even though NOW (National Organization for Women) says on their website that they are against violence towards women.

In the beginning, Gillian Gibbons, 54, was under threat of fine, 6 months in prison and 40 lashes. Her purported crime was letting 7-year-old children that she was teaching name a teddy bear Mohammed. Radical Islamic followers said this intentionally insulted the prophet. Islamic radicals called for her execution. Where was/is NOW's outrage?

NOW (National Organization for Women) seems to be more interested in making sure women have the "right" to kill fetuses. And they love taking on issues of sexuality and harassment. These days some of their issues seem like fluff compared to the real issues of women across the world facing torture and rape in the name of law and religion.

Has NOW lost their voice? Or are they only in it for the money and political side of things? National Organization for Women (NOW) refers to 'violence of poverty emphasized by the radical rights attacks on the poor women and children' on their website. Does this mean that republican women, who are deemed radical rights women, are left in the dust if something violent happens to them?

For those women in their 50's and 60's that actually went out into the workplace when it was not fashionable, was NOW there for you? I have yet to meet a blue-collar woman that has had any help from the National Organization for Women in their quest for jobs. The women I know have "pioneered" their way into all walks of life and every imaginable job. And most of them got their places because they could DO the job, not because NOW gave them the job or had the power to have them hired.

NOW has played their part, maybe too well. The National Organization for Women at times has looked soft, inadequate, inflexible, whiney, and selective in their recent causes. For outward appearances the National Organization for Women (NOW) seems afraid to take on the big problems of violence, intolerance, rape and equality of women on a global level.

Shame befalls NOW for turning its back and closing its eyes and ears to women who are in real peril across the world. The women sitting in prison better look to other organizations; the National Organization for Women has better things to do NOW.

When conservatives across this country, including women, fight to repeal women's rights and assert fundamentalist values it is a sad state that liberals, like NOW, cannot stand up to an even more extreme conservatism overseas. Hopefully, NOW will finds its way.

Wow. Nicely said. NOW mostly exists today to soak up donations from people who think their money is actually helping women. If donors knew the truth about how the organization is run, how long would this last? And the truth always comes out in the end.

NOW is nothing more than a political front for the ultra far left. They could care less about the rights of women. They are absolutely useless! In truth, they could care less what the majority of women even think. It's their way or the highway.

Thanks for your article. As far as I am concerned NOW is not concerned about women's rights or humanitarian rights for women in third world countries. They proved it during the Clinton administration. I watched in horror the documentaries showing Middle Eastern Women being executed for adultry, etc. I didn't hear anything from NOW protesting these barbaric executions. In fact, the only thing I can think of, remember or have heard NOW support is a woman's right to kill her unborn child.

On the money. NOW is only against whatever a Conservative American does, or thinks of doing. As far as the international community NOW would never address a real misogynistic society. That would be enforcing their charter, which I'm sure addresses women's rights worldwide, but in practice the only enforcement NOW engages in is the Liberal political agenda.
