Now You Can Stream Netflix on PS3

There is no doubt that Netflix has revolutionized the process of renting movies and television shows, allowing subscribers to simply build a queue of movies they want to see and rent them out one by one with no late fees. A newer feature Netflix has to offer is the option to instantly watch certain titles on your computer.

There are roughly 20,000 titles available to 'Watch Instantly' which is only a small percentage of the total amount of titles available for rental. However, the number of titles available to watch instantly is steadily growing due to competition from online movie streaming sites such as Hulu.

Instant Movie and TV Show Streaming Made Easy

The latest feature from Netflix allows subscribers to stream movies and television shows directly to your Playstation 3. You may be thinking you can already do that, but it's kind of a hassle and not very efficient to use the built-in web browser to load up your Netflix account, and then have to adjust the screen by zooming in which results in a very pixilated image.

To fix this problem, Netflix has a special streaming disc for the Playstation 3 that you can order from the website, free of charge if you already have an account. Additionally, you will need a high speed internet connection, which shouldn't be a problem for most PS3 owners.

You will need to use a computer to activate your Netflix account so it can work with your PS3. To do this, simply pop your Netflix PS3 disc into your system, and let it do its thing. You will eventually see an activation code which you need to enter from any computer. Once you have done that, you will be brought directly to your Netflix queue every time you insert your Netflix disc into the system.

One minor annoyance is not being able to build your movie queue from the Playstation 3 itself. You can manage your queue of movies right from your system but for some reason it is only possible to browse through certain categories since there isn't really a search function.

Netflix is looking to expand this feature to all console owners with plans to add this feature to the Nintendo Wii. In spring of 2010 it will be possible for Netflix subscribers to stream television episodes and movies right to the television from a Wii console. It will be the same concept as the PS3 where you will need to insert a disc into the system and connect to the internet.

This instant streaming service comes with a Netflix subscription at no extra charge, which is great. It just makes me value my Netflix subscription that much more.
