The New England Patriots and the New York Giants Head West

Wow! It's an all East Coast Super Bowl! New England vs. New York in Football as well as Baseball. Yankees vs. Red Sox in cleats. There is history between these teams, even without the old Curse of the Bambino.

Coach Belichick spent 10 years in the Giants organization; Eli Manning is, of course, Peyton's brother - what history there is between Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts and Tom Brady's New England Patriots. I think Eli and Peyton may have discussed this history often, if not after every Patriots - Colts game.

Local Boston sports talk regular, Steve DeOssie (a former New England Patriot & New York Giant), can be found daily talking Patriots, and participating in a weekly interview with Coach Bill Belichick on the afternoon Big Show for Weei 850 AM Sports Radio. He also pontificates after every Patriot's game, as a commentator/analyst on Boston's WBZ-TV, Channel 4. In another twist of fate, proud papa Steve has a son, Zak DeOssie, a rookie member of the Giants football team. A case of divided loyalty if ever there was one. But, for any parent, family loyalty will come first. DeOssie could recuse himself from these radio and television duties until after the big game, but it would be difficult for Steve, a rather bombastic fellow, not to be part of this great piece of football history.

The Patriots and the Giants faced off in the final game of the regular season, and the Patriots squeaked by with a mere three point win over the Giants. Giants coach Tom Coughlin, a former Boston College coach himself, had been widely criticized for playing his regular players in what was called, a meaningless game, but the Giants seem to have absorbed the intensity of the Patriots and carried it on to their playoff games. Eli's confidence increased, and possibly so did his team's confidence in him to lead, when they came so close to winning against the Perfect Patriots. Whatever it was, the Giants have coalesced into a far more formidable team!

For the New England Patriots, it might have been better, if Coach Coughlin had rested his starters that day.

The AFC/NFC Championships have been decided, in two games played in temperatures more favorable for deep freezing food than playing football. The Patriots have run their way through the Chargers in Foxboro, and the Giants have kicked the Packers into submission in Green Bay.

So, let the hype begin, on to the Super Bowl we go...(feel free to sing the Golden Classic by Mark Lindsay, "Arizona" now)

What do you think? Will the Patriots go 19-0? Can they reach the end of the Path to Perfection and truely be the "Perfect Patriots?" Please leave your comment below.
