Number 1 Sitcom in Television History: Roseanne

Never Forget the Roseanne that Changed the Way Television is Written Today!

Matthew Shively
"I consider myself a pretty good judge of people and that's why I don't like none of 'em." said Roseanne during her 80s television series Roseanne. This was one of the hottest and most controversial television series' during the 80s and 90s. I mean we had Married With Children but nothing topped Roseanne and her infamous words towards her husband Dan and children Darlene, Becky, and D.J. Let's not forget how much Roseanne showed her love to her sister Jackie when it came to her men. I remember the first time I started watching Roseanne, sometimes I couldn't believe she was saying the things she said and how it was allowed on television. However, I kept on watching the show and I was soon hooked. I realized what was being said and the plot of the show was a depiction of many normal families outside of television.

Most notably the most watched television sitcom in 1989 and 1990 became known as the show that would talk about everything nobody else wanted to touch, because of the fear of controversy. That is one of the main reasons why I was hooked. The topics that were talked about on Roseanne were realistic with what was really going on in the real world. Such topics as sex, birth control, teenage pregnancy, masturbation, domestic violence, race, and abortion are just scratching the surface with regards to what was on the show. The realism of the life within the Roseanne house was the icing on the cake that created a show unlike any other.

The Roseanne show was notorious for Rosanne herself. No one knew what she would say next and we couldn't wait to hear it. The show depicted what life was like within a family that was trying financially to make ends meat and support a family at the same time. Dan was always trying to come up with a new and better job venture that would make them rich and bring them out of poverty and Roseanne herself was working to help Dan support the family. All in the end though Rosanne's family stuck together with love and laughter.

At first when watching the show it seems as though Roseanne was always complaining about something and Dan was always taking the heat while sitting on the couch watching the game and drinking a beer after a hard days work. Even though some of the things she said to her children would put you in awww at the same time you couldn't stop laughing. Roseanne seemed like she always disliked men, gays, and sluts. Oddly enough everyone she portrayed to dislike was within her life. Her boss Leon was as gay as they come, Her sister Jackie was the slut, and of course all the men posed a bump in the road to Roseanne at some point. However, the sarcasm and dislike would last through the episode and at the end the love for all seemed to come out and the ending was always a happy one.

Roseanne was number one in my mind during the late 80s because it was real and man I couldn't stop laughing. You know I still watch Roseanne re-runs when I run across them on TV. just to reminisce about the good old days of true sitcom television at its best. In fact, the television we watch today was shaped in my opinion with realism, language, and comedy because of the one and only Roseanne that we will never forget. So take a moment sit down surf the television and find that wonderful sitcom Roseanne and enjoy 30 minutes of true laughter and a moment of life at its best.

I love this show and I still watch it today whenever I can. I think my favorite seasons would have to be seasons one through three. :)
