I could not figure out why it was so cheap. I thought maybe it was the whole bulk is cheaper idea. That was until I received the product. I looked at the ingredients and saw stevia, of course, but also maltodextrin. Maltodextrin is often used as a filler. I was disappointed that it was not pure stevia extract, like the stevia I aways buy. Though, that was my fault for not checking the ingredients thoroughly.
To NuNaturals credit it says on the container they use the maltodextrin to make it easier to measure. I can understand that because the spoon I use to measure my normal stevia purchase is the size an ant would use. It is not something you could easily go off and buy. It is only a 45mg measurement that came with the other brand of stevia I purchase.
When comparing a pure stevia extract with the maltodextrin added NuNaturals NuStevia Powder, in measuring, I typically need 2 scoops of the tiny (45 mg.) spoon for the average mug of hot chocolate I make. The same size mug of hot chocolate with NuNaturals stevia powder takes about 1/2 teaspoon.
Besides the difference in measurement the taste is great. It is just as you would expect from a good stevia extract. It is super sweet alone and sweetens my drinks and desserts perfectly without needing any sugar. The best part is it doesn't have the bitterness that happens when you use too much stevia. The bitterness is what often turns newbies off when they first use stevia. According to the container they removed the bitterness.
While I was at first very disappointed with the added maltodextrin, I do see the reasoning. Many years ago when I first started using stevia I had problems with measuring, since typically you need only an almost immeasurable amount to satisfy the sweet need. If someone is a newbie to the stevia world or just likes to be able to measure with a normal measurement this is a great stevia to buy. I will probably go back to my normal stevia brand but I wouldn't hesitate buying the NuNaturals NuStevia White Stevia Powder again if I ever loose my tiny spoon.
