Nursery Decor Ideas

Along with trepidation and insecurity, there is a certain joy and anticipation experienced as a couple prepares for the arrival of the new baby. Along with purchasing furniture and clothing, the couple generally looks at preparing a room in the house.

Whether the gender of the baby is known at the moment decor is chosen for the nursery or not, the fun of creating this special and welcoming room is present.

Following are a few ideas a couple might want to consider as these preparations are made.

It's a Girl Decor

From puppies to princesses, butterflies to flowers, there are a lot more possibilities for artistic decoration of a nursery welcoming a baby girl.

If you are a talented artist, you may want to create a mural on one wall of the room.
Painting a castle in the background, a forest in the foreground with flowers, fawns, butterflies, a river, and a princess is one idea you might want to consider.

Rainbows and puppies playing in a field might be another option. Your creativity is going to be your limit.

As you have a mural on one side of the room, you may want to consider creating a mobile with figures matching those of the murals for the crib situated on the opposite side.

The mobile can be made of colored pictures, shapes made out of foam, or stuffed fabric figures.

You may want to choose a lamp with a white or off white lamp shade you can then decorate to match the rest of the room decor.

It's a Boy Decor

Boys are fun, even if finding decorating ideas for them is a little bit more challenging.

Trains, planes, cars, or sports themes are typical decorations for boys.

If you don't want to create a train station, an airport, or a race track as a mural, you might want to consider creating a border along the walls at waist's height.

You can use stencils, or buy a border, but instead of pasting the border as is, you might want to cut out shapes and use them separately.

Even little boys love mobiles, so consider creating a mobile based on the theme you have chosen for his room.

For either room, if drawing is not a strong suit for you, consider creating designs with stencils (available at most craft stores). You can also use sponges, shaped in different forms, dipped in paint and gently pressed on the wall.

If there is a design you particularly like but is not available in stores, consider borrowing or renting an overhead projector. Photocopy the design you want on a transparency, place it on the overhead projector and project the picture on the wall of your choice. You can then trace the design and have it look like a professional did it.

If you want a room that grows with your child and will not need a total makeover here are some tips.

Little babies first see contrast shapes in black and white. Paint the walls a white or off white colors, then, instead of painting murals consider hanging pictures that are black and white.

You can find frames that allow you to place two pictures back to back so you can just flip them over and have a brand new picture showing. You could consider having black and white designs on one side and different color and theme designs on the other. As the baby grows, you can turn the pictures over.

You can make reversible pillow covers. One side will have the black and white theme; the other side will have the boy's or girl's theme of your choice. One time sewing will yield years of decoration.
