Plants of All Types for Your Spring Garden Needs

Spring is here and it's time to begin gardening. Weather is always changing in Michigan and sometimes you need a little bit of help when choosing exactly the right plants to create your dream garden, but it doesn't have to be as difficult as it seems. Fortunately our local nurseries are here to help us beautify Flint, Michigan and the surrounding areas with a wealth of knowledge from friendly staff.

Rich's Greenhouse is located on Linden Road, between Maple and Hill Roads. They have been providing flowers, fruits, and vegetables to the Flint area since 1982 and my spring is not complete until I've stopped there at least once. Their staff has remained mostly unchanged since I was a kid, and they are always ready and eager to help you find a gardening solution. In addition to the usual variety of flowers one encounters for spring planting, they also carry vegetable and fruit plants to save you time in the garden. In addition to seedlings and flowers, they also carry hanging baskets and other flower arrangements for beautiful spring gifts.

Annual flowers like pansies and marigolds are plentiful. The also offer a wide variety of pepper plants (both mild and hot), many kinds of tomatoes (roma, beefsteak, etc.), and plenty of squash (including winter and summer varieties). The only drawback is that they don't carry much in the way of trees and bushes, so if you're looking for something large for your yard you probably won't find it here.

If you need trees and shrubs in addition to flowers and smaller plants for landscaping, try Bordine's Nursery. Bordine's has four locations with one in Grand Blanc, just south of Flint. In addition to a large selection, Bordine's Nursery has a great website which includes current sales, care sheets for different types of plants, and a plant guide to let you know what they will be carrying. Bordine's Nursery is located on Torey Road, between Grand Blanc and Baldwin Roads and will be opening back up on April 1st for the 2010 spring season.

The Bordine's website also offers a "plant search" feature which can help find the perfect plant for whatever you are trying to do with your yard. You can search for plants by what you would like them to attract (perhaps hummingbirds or butterflies) or by where you would like to place them (moist soil areas or areas with high foot traffic).

Bundschuh Landscaping is located on Center Road in Burton, Michigan and has been in the same location for over 40 years. They have less in the way of plant choice, but they carry a wide variety of non-plant landscaping items like rocks, paver bricks, and timber for retaining walls. They also offer a helpful staff to assist with questions for the do-it-yourself or entire landscaping project.

The biggest advantage to Bundschuh Landscaping is that they offer services like tree removal and sod installation. These can be big projects for a do-it-yourself person to take on and having knowledgeable people who can help takes away a lot of the home landscaping burden.

You can always choose to go to Lowe's or Home Depot., but why choose one of these corporate giants when you can support a local business? Choosing one of these places or another great local nursery will not only get you a little extra customer service, but it will also probably get you a lot more in the way of local plant knowledge which can save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
