Nursing Homes: Activities, Meals and People

Senior citizens faced with the possibility of living in a nursing home often dread it simply because they feel nursing homes are dark, dismal places at best. Most nursing homes that senior citizens can live in now days are bright, cheerful, happy places to live.

Activities within a nursing home:

There are plenty of activities with in a nursing home, provided by fully trained staff. The activities coordinators arrange a variety of programs from music, baking, cards, bingo and many more so there are plenty of planned activities for senior citizens to enjoy.

Nursing homes are fully decorated for holidays, and in most of the thousands of nursing homes around the nation, the public is invited in for special activities. senior citizens will enjoy youngsters for trick and treat, as well as carolers coming in at Christmas time.

At nursing homes, there are plenty of musical programs, which the public come in to sign and play music for the residents. Some nursing homes also have senior citizen choirs that hold many concerts during the year.

At some nursing homes around the United States, groups of senior citizens who are able can travel by a facility bus to enjoy concerts, shopping trips as well as see the Christmas lights.

Meals within a nursing home:

Very few senior citizens eat in their rooms, but it is permissible in most nursing homes around the country. Senior Citizens can enjoy their meals in a unit dining room with other senior citizens or in the main dining room of the facility.

Meals are type of foods that senior citizens like, nursing home dietitians are equipped to follow any type of diet plan your doctor requests. You can also request special items if the food being served on the main menu is not suitable, or senior citizens can order a sandwich for lunch or dinner.

Staff within a nursing home:

In a nursing home, you will find a variety of staff members who will take care of senior citizens. The staff member senior citizens will have the most contact with is a certified nurses' aide who can help senior citizens with many daily tasks, such as helping with rest rooms needs, dressing, bathing, feeding, and assistance to meals at the home. All certified nurses' aides are fully trained to assist with many tasks, however you will not be the only senior citizen they are taking care of, so please be patient.

You will find two types of nurses in a nursing home and they will dispense the medications, take blood sugars, perform various medical procedures, contacting the doctor if a need arises. Senior Citizens will need to share the nurse with other patients on the floor; rest assured the nurse is there to help you.

Senior citizens will also find housekeepers, floor technicians, a diet staff, and many other staff members that all have their jobs to do at the nursing home. Physical, occupational, and speech therapists are there as well to help senior citizens with any therapeutic needs they may have during their stay at the nursing home.
