Nutiva, Organic Hemp Protein + Fiber was my first experience with hemp protein powder. I have tried hemp seeds before. Though, I am use to other protein powders like rice, soy and pea and I figured Hemp would be similar to those.
Most protein powders are smooth and dissolve well in liquid when mixed right. Nutiva Hemp Protein is completely different than what I am use to. The protein is a dark green and will color your smoothies a green or more often brown. I don't mind it changing smoothies an odd color as long as the smoothie still taste good. That is where the problem is, the taste. The taste is intolerable to me. I tried it in smoothies adding fruits in abundance to lessen the taste of the added protein but all I end up with is a smoothie I can barely choke down or way too much smoothie because I kept adding fruit to take away the taste.
The worst thing is that the serving is 2 scoops, 4 tablespoons, and the 2 scoops only equals 11 grams of protein. . 1 scoop alone makes it hard for me to swallow a smoothie. 2 scoops would be torture or impossible to take. I even tried it in plain water and juice, no success. The texture is rather grainy and fibrous and not as smooth as normal protein powders. That doesn't bother me. It is the taste alone that I can't get past.
I really wanted to like this. It is raw, organic and whole, you can't beat that, but I tried taking it every which way and I have come to avoid it, wasting the rest of the container.
If you are use to the smoother more bland protein powders then approach buying Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein with caution or perhaps see if you can get a sample to try before you spend your money and possibly find out you can't tolerate the taste as I did.
