Nutiva Organic Hemp Seed Oil

Katri Marson
I received a bottle of Nutiva Organic Hemp Seed Oil when I won a Facebook contest for various natural food oil products sold by the natural food store I follow (Like) on Facebook. I wasn't too sure what to do with it. I didn't see myself gulping it by the tablespoon as a supplement (though some do.) There is a recipe on the bottle for a dressing, needing the hemp oil, olive oil and some vinegar, but I am really picky about my dressings and rarely like vinaigrettes so I haven't tried it. It also recommends putting it in your daily smoothie. That sounds reasonably for me. I make smoothies often. But I have yet to try it that way and I'm glad I haven't.

This oil is potent, taste and smell wise. I can't imagine putting it in a smoothie. I have been worried about wasting a smoothie if I put even a small amount in. I think my taste for hemp may be limited. I like the nuts on salads and pasta but when I use them to make hemp milk I just can't seem to enjoy the taste. It's too hempy.

It has an extremely potent green taste. The oil itself is also green in color. I have been getting use to the taste. I add it to my air popped popcorn with some salt and garlic and it ends up with a somewhat pickley dill type taste. Odd but it isn't bad to eat that way. I have found adding it to pasta also works for me.

The bottle of the Nutiva Organic Hemp Seed Oil uses a glass bottle with a cork cap. It is a little deceptive because it looks like a normal plastic screw cap. I learned the hard way by turning it for about 6 hours and noticing it never came close to coming off. Well, I figured it out in a little less than 6 hours but I was surprised to find it being a cork. Once I found it out I like it. It is easy to open, but very sealed and secure. It isn't like a normal corked bottle. You don't need a cork screw. It has a cap and you just twist a little and pull up and it comes right off.

Despite the potent taste Hemp oil contains valuable good fats Omega-3's (ALA & SDA) Omega-6's (LA &GLA), and Omega 9 unlike the more popular flax seed oil which only contains Omega 3's. Nutiva's Organic Hemp Oil is raw, cold-pressed and unrefined.

I thought I would try giving some to me itchy kitty who could really use some Omega fatty Acids, but it turns out like mother, like daughter she can't stand the taste of it either, not even mixed with her favorite food.

I am getting use to the taste and plan on sticking to adding it to more savory dishes and it leaving out of sweet ones, like smoothies. I also use it on my poor sensitive skin on my face without a reation. For the health benefits of hemp oil I am going to try harder to really love the taste of hemp. It is growing on me, a little. I would buy this Nutiva brand again. If you like the taste of hemp I would highly recommend Nutiva's Organic Hemp Seed Oil.
