I am a first time mom. I was warned before I had my beautiful baby girl (at 41 weeks) that I should get lots of sleep during the day while my baby slept by more experienced moms. This idea sounded good to me. What I didn't expect was to have a baby that wouldn't sleep. I thought when they were first born they would sleep most of the day. I had even heard from several mom that they were bored their first few weeks. That wasn't my experience. My baby started to cry when she came into this world and didn't stop for 2.5 months. In fact she cried so much they wouldn't even keep her in the nursery at the hospital.
I had plenty of milk. I fed her often, I put her on a schedule and I even tried to supplement with formula in case that was a problem. I took her to the doctor time and time again knowing that something wasn't right. But I got the same response every time. "She is healthy and growing like a weed its just colic." We tried every trick in the book. Basic Swaddling. Prescription medication. Over the Counter Drops. Special Swaddling Blankets. Car Rides. Calming Music. Nothing was working.
The Breaking Point
I found myself at the grocery one afternoon. She started to fuss a little and within minuets was into her full scream. Person after person asked if they could help as I casually grabbed milk out of the cooler. She continued to escalate. I hurried and found myself at the register 30 minutes later not able to find my wallet. I had left it at home. With a cart full of groceries I broke down. She had cried over 8 hours so far that day and we were just headed into her fussy time.
I called the doctor again and took her in the next day. Again he said it was colic but with my husband in tow this time we begged for help. The doctor said "I'm just going to throw this out there. We could take her off of breast milk and try Nutramigen." My husband quickly chirped in with "We will try anything."
The Change
We took her home and immediately started her on Nutramigen. She refused for 10 hours but we stuck with it and by night she was contently drinking the Nutramigen. That night was the last time we had a screaming fit. It was over that quickly. We held our breaths that it would come back for a few weeks but it never did. This formula changed our lives. The stress level dropped dramatically in our homes and we were finally able to enjoy this little treasure. Our little girl even started to take naps consistently throughout the day.
She is now eight months old. We took her off of Nutramigen at six months. She did wonderfully although I know some need to stay on it until they reach one year. She is an active little girl crawling and moving everywhere. She is generally happy unless she is getting a new tooth to her already mouth full of them. We are so grateful that this was recommended to us. It saved our sanity and likely our marriage.
Nutramigen
Although for a 16 ounce can you will pay $25 or more it is worth every dime. My husband I are middle class at best. We struggle just like thousands of you to make our bills and feed our family. Nutramigen cost us over $250 a month for our baby. It was more that we have budgeted to feed our entire family but I wouldn't take a dollar back. Our little girl was happy because she wasn't feeling sick all of the time. Nutramigen works best for babies who have difficulty digesting intact proteins found in milk. This is even found in soy products. I would recommend this product to any mother who is struggling with a severely colic baby.
