NY Bikini Restaurant Rejects Melody Morales Because of Her Accent; But She's Still Hopeful!

Sarah F. Sullivan
The tale of Melody Morales is one involving misguided dreams, laughable discussions about "assets" and a more serious accusation of dialect discrimination.

The former Hooters waitress is suing the Times Square restaurant, the Hawaiian Tropic Zone, for refusing her a job based on her accent. Morales told the New York Daily News that she sought a job at the restaurant last March, but the manager told her, "I am not going to ruin my business with your Latin accent."

Undeterred, Morales continued chasing her dream of working at the high-class Hooters establishment as a bikini-clad waitress, returning to the restaurant months later. She was instantly told by another manager,

"We will not hire you because you have a speech problem," and "You have a Latin accent."

However, despite the blatant discrimination, Morales seems more upset by the fact that the management didn't even give her the chance to strut her stuff, whimpering to the New York Daily News, "They never even looked at me in a bikini."

Her lawyer, Derek Smith, had this to say, "It is 100% illegal to discriminate because of where you're from or because you have an accent. Melody certainly has the assets for this job."

I'm not sure whether to be more disturbed by the management or by Morales' lovesick obsession with working at the Hawaiian Tropic Zone. She should have sued the first time management ridiculed her and definitely shouldn't have returned a second time.

This isn't the first time the restaurant has gotten into hot water. It is currently facing a $600 million federal suit from four former female workers accusing an ex-boss of sexual abuse. Though Morales says that she believes it, she still wants to work there.

However, there is one part of the story that doesn't make sense: the fact that management rejected Morales because of her accent. The Hawaiian Tropic Zone website has a list of headshots and accompanying likes and dislikes of their current employees. The place is a veritable melting pot of accents and dialects. Some of these women represent Russia, Nigeria, Croatia, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and a healthy dose of Brooklyn.

As Morales insists, she has the "assets"--34-D cup size as the New York Daily News was kind enough to point out. Having seen pictures of Morales, I can say that she isn't unattractive. So is there something besides her accent that made managers reject her twice?

Only time and an impending lawsuit will tell.

"Having seen pictures of Morales, I can say that she isn't unattractive."

The picture that I saw in the New York Daily News seemed altered.
