NY Foods Company Recalls 286,000 Lbs of Meat

What We Can Learn from This Mishap

It's not the first time we've heard it. Some meat, sent out to supermarkets nation wide, has been found to have deadly bacteria in it. This time it's Listeria. Next time, it could be E-coli. And who knows what the meat industry will come up with next, but the big question is, what can we learn from mishaps like the NY foods company recall and related incidents?

It's very important to have some sort of game plan when it comes to the food you eat. Only you have your best interest at heart. So that means, you have to be on the look out for ways to avoid these types of recalls.

First we have to look at how the problem was discovered. Federal food and safety inspectors and Florida Agricultural officials took samples of the meat. However, if we take some time to really think about it, the bacteria would not have been found if Agricultural officials had not been taking samples.

Luckily, there have been no reports of illnesses. However, hopefully, officials are doing a thorough job of checking out everyone.

The recall included several brands produced by Gourmet Boutique. And in order to alleviate any future cases, Gourmet Boutique has made some "environmental changes" at its plants.

With that said: how can we prevent ourselves from consuming tainted meat?

Well here are a few things we can do.

Stop buying beef.

This may seem drastic, but studies have shown that there are many advantages. For instance in one article I wrote,Red Processed Meats May Double Breast Cancer Risks, I showed that red meats may not be as beneficial to health as some people may think.

Buy organic

If you buy organic meat, you are most likely going to avoid buying meat that is overly processed or that comes from untrusted companies. Organic meat is usually certified. That means it has to go through a lot of screenings before it is put on the market.

Taking the above precautions should help you to avoid eating meat that has deadly bacteria in it. Listeria is definitely nothing to play with, and if the big company meat producers are not able to control contaminated beef being sent out into the supermarkets, you as a consumer have to think of something. So what do you do? Stop eating beef or at least stop eating it so often, and buy organic.
