The New York Giants are the biggest waste of talent ever assembled on paper. The have a multitude of Pro Bowl players and no team has underachieved more than them. Giant's fans had Super Bowl expectations and some experts predicted that they would make a run deep into the playoffs. That can still happen but it is highly unlikely. The list of Pro Bowl players include Michael Strahan who has missed most of the season due to a foot injury and will miss the last season game after re-injuring it. Other Pro Bowl players include Osi Uminyora, Sam Madison, Tiki Barber, Jeremy Shockey, Luke Petigute, and emerging stars like Plaxico Buress and Mathiwas Kiwanuku.
This Giants team is stocked with talent so why have they done so poorly and why are they in a tailspin loosing 6 out of tier last 7 games? It is easy to blame injuries as Amani Toomer and Straham are out for the season and Osi Uminyora was out for several games. You can blame Eli Manning for underperforming. However, the blame must start first with the coach, Tom Coughlin.
When Tom Coughlin first coached the New York Giants, he brought discipline to the team and was known as a tough coach who got results. He brought those results in his first season as coach. Now however, he seems to have lost control of his team. His trademark discipline is no longer listened to by his team as they lead the league in personal fouls, a sign of how undisciplined the Giants are. Watching the New York Giants game against the New Orleans Saints, you could see how undisciplined the players were as Bob Whitfield head butted another player and Sean O'Hara pushed another opposing player to the ground for another personal foul penalty. The Giants players are frequently called for off sides penalties which show they lack focus.
The play calling has been awful for the Giants and players are dropping the ball like Jeremy Shockey which shows they are practicing hard enough or long enough. Despite the pleas from Tom Coughlin, Tiki Barber seems to have mailed in this season as he is thinking about retirement. Not even a packed Giants stadium for Tiki Barber's last home game could get the Giants prepared to face the Saints. The game wasn't even competitive as the Giants got blown out by a score of 30-7.
The Giants need a new voice to lead this team as the veterans are on their way out the door with Tiki Barber retiring and Straham soon to follow. Charlie Weis has been mentioned as a possible replacement but he looks content coaching Notre Dame. Whoever comes in to replace Tom Coughlin, needs to help Eli Manning develop quickly and make Giants fans forget that the San Diego Chargers turned the Giants draft picks into Pro Bowlers Drew Brees, Philip Rivers and Shawn Merriman.
