The New York Giants lost their backup quarterback for the season on Tuesday. The team may use a trade in order to fill the void.
Numerous sources, including the Washington Post, SB Nation and ESPN's Adam Schefter, are reporting that the New York Giants have contacted the Arizona Cardinals regarding quarterback Matt Leinart. Jim Sorgi, former backup to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, was brought in during the offseason to play behind Giants QB Eli Manning. It was not meant to be, however, as Sorgi and two others were placed on IR on Tuesday morning.
Leinart, a quarterback who has never reached what is believed to be his full potential, spent the last several years backing up future hall of fame QB Kurt Warner. After Warner retired last winter, many believed the 2010 NFL season would be Leinart's time to shine. Instead, the Cardinals brought in former Cleveland QB Derek Anderson to compete for the starting role. Anderson has impressed the Arizona coaching staff this August, and will start the team's final preseason contest tomorrow night.
As things stand right now, unproven QBs Rhett Bomar and Dominic Randolph are the Giants' second and third string QBs.
Matt Leinart could be a great pickup for the Giants, but only at the right price. Several rumors suggest the Cardinals simply want to get rid of Leinart, but the Giants could end up in a bidding war with teams like Oakland and Buffalo. While the Giants do need a reliable backup QB for Eli Manning, sending numerous draft picks to Arizona should be out of the question.
