If you have Verizon FiOS, you may be able to watch the New York Giants on your television in 3D this September.
The Giants communications office has confirmed that the September 2 New England Patriots at New York Giants preseason match-up will be shown in 3D. This will be the first time any NFL contest has aired on 3D TV. Verizon FiOS subscribers in the New York/New Jersey/Massachusetts/Rhode Island area can view the game on channel 834. A 3D television set, 3D glasses and high definition set-top box are all necessary to view the Patriots-Giants game in 3D.
Mike Stevens, Chief Marketing Officer for the New York Giants, was quoted as saying "The Giants are excited to host the first 3D broadcast of an NFL Game in our new stadium. We have worked closely with our partner Verizon in developing new technology throughout the stadium for our fans, and now Verizon FiOS and the Giants will be taking the next step in innovation for our fans at home."
The Verizon on-air broadcast team should be familiar to both Giants fans and New York sports fans. Spero Dedes will call play-by-play. Howard Cross will join him in the booth and Kimberly Jones will serve as sideline reporter.
Don't have Verizon FiOS or a 3D TV? Verizon is working with sports bars Slate Bar in Manhattan and Snookers in Providence, Rhode Island in order to show off the company's 3D technology.
3D television sets are, at the present time, incredibly expensive and are found in a very small percentage of homes. When compared with cable and satellite TV, FiOS is still relatively an infant, even in the New York viewing area. Nevertheless, football in 3D is a very cool concept, one that will attract the interest of NFL fans around the country;
if only for a sneak peak while at a local bar.
