It was reported on Wednesday that the New York Giants may be interested in trading for disgruntled Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart. What a difference a day makes.
The New York Post and other sources around the New York area reported early Thursday morning that the Giants will not be trading for Matt Leinart before the start of the 2010 NFL season. Reports surfaced yesterday that the Giants may be interested in acquiring Leinart due to the fact that the team is currently without a proven backup quarterback. Jim Sorgi, the number two quarterback on the roster heading into August, was placed on IR earlier in the week.
The biggest reason the Giants won't be trading for Leinart? The young quarterback has been very outspoken during the week about wanting to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. The Giants already have a reliable man at that position, so unless Eli Manning goes down during this evening's Patriots-Giants game (knock on wood), Leinart won't be wearing a Big Blue jersey in 2010.
So what now? The Post story suggests the Giants may acquire current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sage Rosenfels, would could be cut before the end of Labor Day weekend. Rosenfels would likely have no problem playing behind Eli Manning on the Giants' depth chart.
The Giants were never going to give up much for Leinart, and head coach Tom Coughlin certainly doesn't want to bring an unhappy backup quarterback to the roster. Doing so just isn't necessary. Leinart may still get moved before the start of the 2010 NFL regular season. Possible destinations include Oakland and Buffalo.
