The New York Giants placed three players on the team's injured reserve list on Tuesday morning. The biggest news from this is the fact that the Giants are now currently without a backup quarterback.
Jim Sorgi, the number two QB on the Giants' depth chart heading into August, will not play during the 2010 NFL regular season due to a bum shoulder. Sorgi hurt his shoulder in the Giants' preseason opener against the New York Jets, and never showed signs of recovery. His comeback time was constantly being pushed back, and many New York Giants journalists/experts expected Sorgi to be placed on IR before Thursday's Giants-New England Patriots contest.
Rhett Bomar and Dominic Randolph will now battle to be Eli Manning's backup quarterback during the season.
Wide receiver Sinorice Moss, competing for a wide receiver/kick returner position, was placed on IR after having surgery to repair a sports hernia. His spot was already in jeopardy due to fan favorite Victor Cruz been impressive during the preseason.
Sixth round draft pick linebacker Adrian Tracy was also placed on IR (elbow). The Giants also released wide receiver Nyan Boetang (roster cuts).
Eli Manning is one of the toughest quarterbacks in the NFL, and he (knock on wood) never misses a start. Regardless, entering the season with Rhett Bomar/Dominic Randolph as the team's backup quarterback is a bit of a concern. Hopefully, Sorgi will be able to work with these young quarterbacks during the rest of August and into early September. Bomar has not lit anybody's world on fire thus far, and Randolph has yet to take a snap during the 2010 NFL preseason.
