The New York Giants will be without starting quarterback Eli Manning during this week's practices as well as this Saturday evening when the team takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Backup quarterback Jim Sorgi is also banged up. The Giants will get a look at a different quarterback, a rookie, for at least a week.

The Giants have announced that the team has signed rookie quarterback Dominic Randolph out of Holy Cross. Heading into this morning, Rhett Bomar was the only quarterback able to practice and was the only QB in camp yesterday as both Manning and Sorgi were sidelined.

This is actually the second time that Randolph has been with the Giants. He was invited to the team's rookie camp in May, but did not make the cut. Randolph holds Holy Cross career records in various categories, including passing yards, completions and touchdowns.

To make room on the Giants' roster for Randolph, the team cut rookie tight end Jake Ballard, a player mostly unseen during training camp due to a bum hamstring.

Randolph will need to be shockingly good both in practices and against the Steelers this Saturday to get any serious consideration from the Giants coaching staff. While nothing is set in stone just yet, the role of backup quarterback to Eli Manning currently belongs to Jim Sorgi. Stranger things have happened in NFL training camps and preseason games. Just ask Victor Cruz.

Update: Jim Sorgi is expected to miss two to three weeks due to shoulder injury. Randolph will receive more than just a glance from the Giants, after all.
