New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was the big hero against the Houston Texans yesterday, catching twelve passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Nicks is keeping things in perspective, well aware that New York's offense has plenty of work left in front of them.
"I just like to contribute to the offense the best way possible," Nicks stated on Monday. "That's my job. It's good that we've got momentum, and we've got to keep going up from here. We've just got to keep on preparing well throughout the week and then going out there on Sundays and playing. I think we came together as a team. We worry about what's going on in our locker room and take things for what it is, and we know what we need to work on and get better at."
One things both Giants fans and "experts" talked about during the preseason was Nicks' chemistry with quarterback Eli Manning. It's become clear during the first five weeks of the season that the two players are on the same page. "I think Eli, he's starting to get the feel for me as a little bit more of the season goes on," Nicks explained. "He knows I'm hardworking and I'm determined to get the job done."
Nicks has been the Giants' offensive MVP in 2010, with six touchdown receptions in five contests. The young WR is determined to remain grounded with his eyes on the true prize; a championship. "Honestly I really don't even think about (his stats) right now. I'll probably check it out towards the end of the season. Right now I just want to focus on contributing to the team and being here and enjoying it."
Nicks is turning into the wide receiver Giants fans dreamed of when he was drafted a couple of years ago. As teams are forced to respect Nicks more and more, space will open for fellow WRs Steve Smith and Mario Manningham.
