NY Liberty Ad: "A Woman's Place is in the Garden."

Is a Woman's Place in the Garden or in Madison Square GARDEN?

Tiffany Lopes

Last week I was baffled after having encountered a sign that said "A man's place is in the Arrowhead Pond." I mean, to say that men belong in a pond is just vicious…even if they are scum. Damn those Anaheim Mighty Ducks advertising guru's.

Okay, so that didn't happen. There's no sign indicating that a man's place is in a pond. But while leaving my office building today for some fresh air, I found this banner for the NY Liberty. A woman's place is in the Garden. If you're not familiar with the Liberty or much of New York, Madison Square Garden is what we abbreviators call "the Garden."

I mean, I see what they were trying to do. Beat out the competition, balls to the wall, with a catchy little slogan trying to tell us that, really, if you want to go see chicks play pro-ball, there's no other place like Madison Square Garden.

I'm not opposed to this women's pro sports teams spearheading effort at all (duh, I'm a lesbian.. it's what we thrive on) but to have this come about through that kind of advertising (which by the way is larger than a car) is just useless.

You're trying to say "come watch the Liberty play basketball, it's as interesting as the Knicks" but what you're really saying is "please make sure to wear your apron and bring your oven mitts because we're going to be baking apple pies for our loving husbands."

To be completely honest, I've been to a Liberty game. It's a great place to meet Bush-haters (the president) and Bush-lovers (you know what I'm talking about). And I know that's a stereotype but, hey, if they're allowed to present their stereotypes in several hundred foot banners, I think I can present mine in a several hundred word rant.

So, in a few words… thank you to the media for your abysmal role in perpetuating gender stereotypes.

Madison Square Garden is located above Penn Station, one of the two hotspots for commuters. Also located a block from Macy*s Herald Square... how many people do you think walk by this banner each day? hundreds of thousands?

i think they were trying to say 'to all the idiots who think a woman can't do anything but household chores you are wrong. a woman's place could very well be in madison square garden, playing basketball, so open your minds'. it's not perpetuating anything, rather the opposite: challenging you to think past your stereotypes. and because it's placed on the Garden itself, where thousands of men come in and out (as well as women), it's addressing them directly.

but i can understand how you can be touchie about this, being in a minority group can take you to that place.
