NYC Nightlife Guide for Lower Manhattan

A Guide to Greenwich Village, the West Village, and the East Village

Kelly Herdrich
New York City boasts one of the most bustling night-life scenes in the United States. Whether spending an evening at a bar with a group of friends, relaxing at a lounge with drinks before a dinner date, or going clubbing with the girls, the night-life in NYC offers a little bit of everything. Lower Manhattan is infamous for the activity it brings to New York City night-life. The best activities for a busy night in the West Village, the East Village, and Greenwich Village can be found right here.

Pubs or Bars
Heading out for a drink after work or meeting up with some friends for a drink or two? Consider a pub or bar in lower Manhattan. The Blue Ribbon Downing Street Bar in the West Village is great for individuals or small groups, and features a full bar and no smoking. It's a great wine bar in a great location. If martinis are more your thing, head to Angel's Share in the East Village, a martini bar ideal for a midweek drink. Vol de Nuit is perfect for a younger crowd, with lots of beer at fairly reasonable prices. The lower Manhattan bar list could go on and on, making them a mainstay of the night-life in NYC.

Lounges
Slightly more upscale than a pub or a bar, lower Manhattan also offers a variety of lounges. Expect comfortable couches, benches and a full cocktail menu at most lounges. Some will have live music or border on a nightclub, while others are romantic hole-in-the-wall spots ideal for a few drinks before dinner. Try the Velvet Cigar Lounge in the East Village for a stunning selection of drinks and cigars and a change of pace. Also in the East Village, try the Blue Owl for tapas or the Sin Sin Leopard Lounge for a romantic drink over candlelight. Try the Apple Restaurant & Bom Bar in Greenwich Village for an Asian feel and delicious cocktails. The relaxing and upscale atmosphere of a lounge is perfect for starting a night in lower Manhattan.

Nightclubs
Headed out and hoping to see some celebrities dancing the night away? It wouldn't be unheard of at a night club in lower Manhattan. Try the Sullivan Room in Greenwich Village for reasonably priced drinks and a great DJ music scene. Cielo is a bit more exclusive and expensive, but this West Village nightclub has a classy atmosphere often lacking in nightclubs. Or, head to Le Royale in the West Village for a live band to try out some dancing and mingling. Expect a happening club scene in lower Manhattan, whichever nightclub you decide to try.

Though a night out in lower Manhattan won't come cheap, the night-life can be worth every penny if you find the right spots. The younger crowd that is often found frequenting lower Manhattan hotspots is energized and energizing. Whether heading out to spot some celebrities, enjoy a martini with the love of your life, or relax with friends, lower Manhattan has it all.
