NYU coming to downtown Brooklyn

You've probably noticed that downtown Brooklyn has been growing in leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. You know who else has noticed? New York University.

Back in April the Brooklyn Eagle reported that NYU wanted to expand its current campus from 700,000 square feet to about a million. Not too shabby! The academic areas scheduled to be expanded likely include continuing education, arts and sciences.

Just this week, NYU released a little more information about what we can expect from the NYU 2031 master plan. Of course we already know the school plans to build at least one tower on Jay Street but they've just announced that the overall feeling throughout the specified neighborhood will be of a true campus.

The school and the city project that the plan will take five to seven years to complete and will occur incrementally as expansion takes advantage of available air rights. Central to this new campus will be the Campus Walk, which will act as the "spine" running north-south throughout. Ultimately, the campus will be connected to both Cadman Plaza and Brooklyn Heights.

The prospect of this refreshing campus not only brings the possibility of more localized higher education to the borough of Brooklyn, but also will help revitalize the economy there. In fact, the sheer presence of this expanded campus could, in actuality, revitalize the entire community.
