If I had never read with passion,
If I had never defined love or beauty or need,
If I had never felt the edges of my thought and reach beyond,
If I had never pressed my hand around a pen as if to break it
- O snowy mountains!
O dark, mossy stairways!
O pits and spires of humanity! -
If I had never known one word to illuminate your being
Before the sun rose this morning,
I would have found them by this afternoon.
