Oahu vs Maui: Which is the Better Vacation Spot?

Comparing and Contrasting the Advantages of Both Islands

Jane
The two most popular vacation spots in the Hawaiian Islands are undoubtedly Maui and Oahu, but how do you choose? With tropical vacations occurring far and few for most us, when we're on vacation we want it to be the absolute best it can be and it doesn't hurt to do a little homework when planning these once-in-a-lifetime experiences, especially when it comes to Hawaii. The following are important matters to consider prior to deciding your vacation locale: Who are you traveling with? The deciding factor for which island to stay on could very well be dependent on who you're with. Both islands offer different appeals to different types of parties.

For instance, Oahu is excellent for groups of friends due to its shopping and nightlife, and Maui is perfect for couples who would prefer a more low-key getaway without the fast-paced vibe of Oahu. With an abundance of tourists from around the world, Oahu is great for meeting new people, whereas Maui is better for being intimate and alone. In all, Oahu is optimal for groups of peers or on-the-go families, whereas Maui is the best bet for couples and families looking for a chance to slow down. What activities are you interested in? With all the activities out there to do, really think about what your top picks are ahead of time. Would you prefer to be spending your time hiking or shopping, be in more commercial or natural environments, or socializing or quietly relaxing on the beach?

Both islands offer advantages in their own ways. For example, Maui boasts great hiking trails filled with bamboo forests and waterfalls, which would make it the prime pick for hikers. And while both islands have shopping galore, the shops themselves are quite different overall (with the exception of all the ABC drugstores). Oahu is fabulous for those that love luxurious high-end goods and commercial chain stores, but Maui is the better pick for more "mom and pop" type stores with lots of "made in Hawaii" handcrafted goods.

In addition, we know going to the beach is a must in Hawaii, but there is more to know. Oahu beaches tend to be populated with large crowds, with people more sparsely spread on the beaches of Maui. Both islands offer water sports such as jet-skiing and surfing, so it's really a matter of preference. Overall, Oahu has a more city-like feel to it of the two islands and Maui seems to contain more preservation of Hawaiian history, with their available activities reflecting that furthermore.

Oahu and Maui have so many similarly great offerings to its visitors - weather, restaurants, luaus, and accommodations. It really comes down to who and what you want out of your trip. Surely it would be difficult to have a poor stay on either island, but with a little thinking prior to booking your Hawaiian vacation it may be the best trip of your life.
